Plenty of dogs I know would happily chase and harass a cat, so I'm inclined to think that it's more likely that the dog deserved it than not...

It’s a valuable lesson.

Dogs and cats communicate very differently. And cats sure as hell are not prey animals to be trifled with.

I’m pretty sure an eagle could best a cat in a fight, but they hold their own against many dogs.

Pound for pound, cats are way more dangerous in a fight than dogs. It's just that cats are usually ~1/3 the weight of the dog that also lives in the house.

Which is also why they're social animals. One cat isn't a match for a bear. When ten cats are together the bear is rethinking its choices.

I've seen a lone cat take a black bear before but I think most toddlers could handle a black bear as long as it's not a mother with children. One time on here I joked that high alcohol consumption for a few years is probably worse for you than a light mauling from a black bear and somebody got pissy enough to comment / report saying I was spreading misinformation and a) that's clearly a joke but also b) tell me you didn't grow up rural LOL because everybody knows if you see a black bear you can usually just puff up and yell at it. I've seen cats tree black bears.

Black bears are little scaredy babies generally. Of all the bears to meet, they're the only ones I'd not be horrified to see!

A dog that is scared of the cat keeps a cat safe

A cat that is not afraid of a dog is soon coyote poop in my area.

Keep the little murder machines inside please.

Most medium sized dogs could easily kill a cat but they simply dont want to. They just wanna be frens :)

like a grown man 1000 times its size running away from a hornet

picking the right battles is wise

Our cat scares away dogs passing by, she's not to be messed with

My cat in his prime had big dogs crossing the street when they approached my house

Based alert

Can I adopt the dog? I don't like this situation for it.

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Sounds like cat to me. They have two modes, attack everything, or run away. Also, when they are with their peeps, cuddle machine, but only with their peeps. The other two modes still apply as well. At all times they are in observe and report surveillance mode.

Oh hey, this is just like my void! Established dominance with the dog on day 1 (cat was first)

Must be a void thing lmao

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

My black cat tries to be friend with butterflies. Probably not a void thing.

My cat is 18 and the other day he tried to attack a dog that is at least 4 times his weight. Keep in mind his top speed is typically very very very slow. But I’ve never seen him move as fast as when he tried to jump on this dog.
