I've had long conversations with my meatspace friends about this, and I do the same thing with them. I prefer subtle implication, to the point of near-invisibility, because it feels more 'sincere' than explicit statements. But such subtle implication is often missed even by people who've known me my entire adult life and are receiving my interactions in meatspace, where subtlety is more apparent.
IT JUST FEELS SO MUCH MORE NATURAL TO NOT SAY IT AND HOPE PEOPLE PICK UP ON IT ANYWAY

I just say it directly and it works out far better with the vast majority of people that are worth interacting with than dropping hints ever did. Now if they might think I'm being forward or suggesting more than what I'm saying because most people do that, saying the thing and then moving on to something else fairly quickly and not dwelling keeps it from being misread.
Me, meaning: "You're one of my closest and dearest friends. I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm deeply grateful for your presence in my life."
Me, saying: "Cool."
