Intel really ought to just pull an AMD and spin off their foundry biz
Gelsinger wanted to do it. Biden Admin shut it down, saying the federal money they were getting to build a fab was contingent on them staying together.
I think there was an internal plan for Intel to split its design and fabrication departments into two companies like ten years ago.
They're still talking about doing it if they can't raise enough money to make it through the next R&D cycle. The deals with Nvidia and USA's federal government gets them about half way there.
It's the fabs that the us gov cares about though. You could end up with ex intel fabs producing AMD chips, with intel bankrupt. (Amd would buy them to save the cross licensing)
