Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Not a gender-identity thing, but I met my best friend when I was 12. We didnt have any classes together so I never heard his name called out in the register.

Wasn't until we were having a drink at 18 that I realised I didnt actually know his real name.

This one is a hard one, as a cis-gender male, I don't go by my real name. If someone calls me by my birth name I wouldn't even know they were referring to me.

I think its more to do with gender rather than names, that and the will to be cruel, of course.

Yeah, I go by my middle name and nobody thinks it's weird.

The only people that call me by my middle name are my... estranged family. So its sort of an insult in a way. Weird how that works out.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I get it. There's a nickname only my estranged family uses.

Honestly, I'd rather go by 'Malcronax the Ultimate Destroyer' but Harvey works well in most cases. That's what most call me.

The only people that have a problem with people changing gender is religious people that think that a fictional god assigned them a gender at birth, because their god knows and controls everything, so can never, ever, ever, ever be wrong about anything. Ever. Like a person's gender. So they hate everyone that questions their fictional hate book. Because it takes them a lot of work to live in that weird, fictional religious reality they want to so badly.

Be whatever gender you want to be. I'll call you whatever you want, but at least stick to it for a bit.

I recently learned that Charlie Sheen's birth name is Carlos Irwin Estévez.

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep, he adopted the stage name of his father, Martin Sheen (Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez).

[–] teft@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everyone always forgets the brother who kept his name, Emilio Estevez.

I remeber when the first Mighty Ducks movie came out, I thought the main dude was Charlie Sheen.

Stage names are common for marketing something catchy. Book author aliases too.

JK Rowling used her initials because the publisher thought the books would sell better under a less feminine name. She now uses an even more masculine pen name for her detective novels. There's nothing wrong with that in and of itself, but it's kind of hypocritical given her outspoken anti-trans viewpoints.

Hilarious that a TERF is using a masculine pen name for her book sales.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

People should start calling her Book Trans or something and call her the fuck out

TIL it was a fart joke.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've never encountered or noticed this problem that you mention.

I can't even see an issue with choosing a name that suits their gender, whatever that may be..

Is this really such a big deal irl?
