Because as far as I can tell, it’s a gimmicky dumpster fire, and I’m pretty sure everything is worse. And my battery life is awful. I looked into rolling the OS back, and apparently it’s not feasible. I may switch back to my iPhone 13 as my daily driver.

This is something that has always helped me out: For future reference, if you’re not sure how an update will work for you (stability, etc.), you can:

  1. Backup your devices on the computer (via iTunes). I have photos, music, etc. on an EHD. I recently helped a friend rollback to iOS 18 – her exact saved state prior to iOS 26 – from her backup on iTunes. When she’s ready, she wants to do a fresh install instead of updating from the iOS’ current state.

  2. Fresh Install. After backing up necessary info (iCloud, etc.) and logging out of services, wipe your iOS device. When you get to your desired iOS state (iOS 16, 18, etc.), the first app you need to download is your password manager, followed by the rest. It’s quite easy after that.

# 2 only sounds scary but it isn’t – I do it every several months. As long as you backup, you’re fine.

In case you’re wondering why I chose to run my apps from an EHD it’s because of my experience with updating OS and purchasing new Mac – the transition was smooth and effortless. I can open my music on my old 2021 MBP (first M1 chip) and on the iMac at work or any MacOS. I figured that if I could do it on windows there must be a way to make it work on a Mac.

iOS 26 may take some getting used to especially for some folks who only use one device and one OS. I’m still getting used to it, my work phone is on iOS 26 and my personal phone is still on iOS 18. My parents kept bugging me to update their phone and a few days later, they absolutely hate me for what I did to their phone, Lol.

I saw something actually useful, and it's completely insane that this is barely being added. Here it goes:

The files app can now show thumbnails of remote files from a Samba server.

I am not kidding.

I must profess ignorance as to what a samba server is

[–] net00@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Basically, I have a linux mini pc ( a NAS ) set up to be the place where I dump all my pictures, videos, movies, and other files from my iphone, windows pc, ipad, etc. In linux, you have this utility called Samba which enables network access to files through SMB protocol. This let's me easily connect from my iphone, ipad, windows pc (and even TVs) and access all these things seamlessly.

It's my own personal cloud storage, but better, faster and private.

So back in iOS 13 apple added the ability to use the stock files app to connect to SMB servers. Since the Files app is integrated in everything across iOS this was a great addition. Except that for some very dumb reason they didn't implement thumbnails. So I couldn't simply scroll through my albums (some which have many hundreds of pictures) because all files were white boxes with nondescript names. I wasn't about to rename thousands files because that's not worth the effort. Thumbnails are one of the most basic features that they should have added.

Then I tried other file manager apps from the app store, but none had the same level of integration across the OS. Some of these apps you could connect to the stock files app. I could see thumbnails with this approach, except that it was a fucking stupid tradeoff. I don't know why yet, but if you browse remote files through apps connected to the stock files app, THE ENTIRE FILES are automatically downloaded. So each time I opened my movies folder with this approach a 30gb download was running in the background, filling a lot my phone storage. Also this makes the entire point of having remote files completely moot. So I went back to the stock files app and dealt with not having thumbnails as best I could.

iOS 26 finally shows me the thumbnails straight from the stock files app. I'm happy, but pissed off that it's taken them ~6 years to do this...

I’m not sure if I just wasn’t aware it was available to me prior to IOS26, but the call screening feature is the biggest plus for me. The transcription is not great but at least I can get a sense of who’s the unknown number calling. I’m on a 12 Pro Max.

The other thing is the dark mode display is growing on me. It was disorienting at first but I kinda like it now. It also looks great in Carplay.

Menu items becoming larger feels like I’m in accessibility mode though, and I wish I could make it smaller like before.

Apple Music has translation for lyrics. I’m trying to learn Spanish, and I already enjoy a lot of Latin music so this has been amazing. Unironically the sole reason I upgraded.

Ok this is cool, and I did not know this. I am good at Spanish, but would like to improve. Thanks, friend!

Photos now has a setting so videos don’t automatically loop. That’s new, isn’t it?

I also appreciate the wider buttons in lots of places, like calendar events. The hit zone for the buttons used to be way too small.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I like the sentiment. I am encountering, especially on my 2023 iPad Pro, numerous instances where buttons don’t register on the first press.

I like the new glass UI style, not the completely clear glass, but the glass effect on icons looks great.

Fair, and I do not begrudge you your enjoyment, friend!
