After getting laid off in January because covering federal green-energy grants became a non-beat on the 20th, this year has been hell.

I've networked as much as I can given zero resources for going out to drink after prior networking attempts were all about putting me down for not having some skill that's obvious to a 25-year-old but was never relevant to me.

I'm not in the technician phase of my life; I'm more of a project manager at this point, but no one wants heterogeneous skills.

Since the layoff, I've had 14 offers for contract work, temporary housing or both. Of those, 14 ghosted at the precise moment of finalizing plans.

Shit is breaking down in my van faster than I can address it -- I crashed with a friend for a night earlier this week just to charge 600Ah of LFP back to the point where the solar kicks in.

But the fridge controls no longer work, and as a result, it runs 24/7 instead of just when it needs to kick on. Despite this, it doesn't get below 50F (10C), meaning I can't store food for much more than a day, which makes getting cheap meat and cheese at the store a nonstarter.

So I'm having to find cheap meals where I can squeeze two rounds out of $4, as I can't buy shit from HEB and have it stay good for long enough that I'm not losing money.

Did I mention the ants have noticed the fridge is no longer cold? I had a burger in the fridge for an hour before going to eat it, and, well ... that didn't happen.

Then there's the matter of the 1200W of solar on the roof that now seem to top out at 280W. That's more than I draw by day, but I tend to use electricity at night as well, and a system designed to recharge by 6kWh/day that's instead producing 1.4kWh is a problem.

My replacement 5G gateway now draws 45W instead of the 18W of the older model. So that's 650Wh out the window for no reason atop 792Wh for the constantly running fridge.

And, hey ... look, the delta is 1.44kWh, meaning I'm only producing enough to cover the waste of my system.

I seriously don't know what to do here. I can't afford a room or anything, but I can't go without power. I'm trying frantically to network outside of formal events and maybe crash somewhere for a couple of weeks while I get used to hygiene again, but this just feels like a hole with no bottom.

There are charities around that do good work, but you have to be a good Christian (or at least pretend to be) to get assistance, and while I do consider myself a good Christian by virtue of following the teachings of Jesus, those are just too woke for Texas. "Love thy neighbour? Fuck off."

Hey there, I've been living abroad for over a decade.

Fluent English speakers can always teach English online if you need a job or just to make ends meet; the demand for teachers is Immense.

It you want to move abroad, cost of living is $500 USD a month in most countries for rent and food.

I'm offering advice to somebody in a tight spot right now in this comment thread, you can check it out and see if you find some of the information useful.

I lived in a solar RV for a year and loved it, but there is always something to fix. Do you shop at solar surplus stores for your components?

Fridge sounds like a thermostat problem, have you already checked YouTube for your model of fridge? When mine was on the fritz I noticed there were a ton of thermostat replacement videos on YouTube for vehicle refrigerators, apparently the thermostats fail all the time.

I got lucky and just had to clean up some pipe grill in the back for my fridge to start working again.

Sorry things are tough right now, feel free to ask me any questions about traveling or teaching English or whatever.

I mean, I might be a bit too fluent to be a good teacher. Can I at least laugh derisively and try to play it off as being all in good fun?

I'm not looking to stay in the states, so if you want to DM me, feel free.

Sorry to hear it homie bee pensive emoji it sounds like things keep falling apart through no fault of your own. I'm sorry that you've been getting nowhere despite all the work you've been putting into rebuilding your career.

Out of curiosity - what are your barriers to taking some stupid service job or something outside of the journalism industry, just to have money to solve some of these problems? (I can think of a million reasons why that might not solve your problems, and you might not want to share what those reasons are, so i totally understand if you want to leave that question unanswered). I only ask bc that would be my first solution if i were in your shoes. Of course we aren't the same person - just curious.

I've had two surgeries on my spine for neuropathy, meaning I can't stand for any length of time ... my balance is fine while in motion, but once I stop moving, I'm holding on to shit.

Then there's the garnishment. I have to go 1099 on account of putting rent on my credit card during the first couple of years of Covid.

got it got it. have you ever explored something like an inbound call center job? if you go through a staffing agency, that sort of job is pretty easy to get. that can be a way of getting short-to-medium term work without having to do a lot of manual labor or moving. i've done it for health insurance before, and the work is a lot less stressful than it sounds. they can be pushy about call handle times, and customers can be mean, but ultimately it's just a voice on a phone and the voice cannot hurt you. Easy to leave work at work, in my experience.

I think a lot of those jobs are outsourced these days, but there are probably still some solid gigs out there? If you're lucky it might even be remote work, though that might not work well with your current living situation. And of course, with the garnishment that might not even make financial sense. You know your situation better than me, i'm just throwing ideas out there!

Funny you should bring up that specific field ... my ex-wife is nationally licensed to sell health insurance and works remote.

But I can't do anything W-2 without making minimum wage after garnishment.

Would you ever consider a Chuffed fundraiser or something of the sort? I know some restaurants in Texas donate their food when they close, and there are non-religious food banks, but I’m not sure how helpful that would be when the main issue seems to be fixing the electric enough so to be able to move abroad.
