I was in college when this happened. It blew our minds. It was completely different than anything else on TV at that day and time, as well as basically anything on TV at any day and time.

I haven't watched it in years, for no other reason than I can't stay up that late anymore.

And just because I know a lot of useless trivia (some of it about SNL), it was originally titled just Saturday Night because ABC had beaten them to air by a month with a show called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. Luckily that show didn't last long, and by season 2 the NBC show became Saturday Night Live. But that's why at the beginning of every episode, they still yell "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" They're using the original title.
