I feel like if Star Trek were truly trying to be authentic data would have eaten at least one cat in some I'll-fated and misguided attempt To be more human.

Actually, it's now canon to me that these cats die all the time in well-meaning but misguided experiments with humanity and that the crew of the enterprise just replaces them, like an 8 year old that keeps killling goldfish.
