I like how the expansion is making the devs rethink all of the game as they add features. It would be easy to skip over ghosts and leave them as they were. Now they are cooler and more functional.

Well, in a way they have to, to prevent the expansion/new base game becoming a muddled mess.

It works fine in the Space Exploration mod. However, the Factorio development team don't seem willing to settle for "fine". Their pride demands exceptional, in all areas. They generally deliver too. 😁
