People who have never set foot in a big city, let alone NYC

[–] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 14 points 17 hours ago

They all said they'd leave if he won. I'm waiting for them to do just that.

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago

Pass me that bottle of copium

"NEW YORK WILL BE DESTROYED JUST LIKE PORTLAND!!!!!!!!!!"

Logs into all the public webcams in Portland and sees that everything is fine and, oh my, what a beautiful city.

Buys a plane ticket to Portland just in case the webcams were fake news. Oh yes, oh my, what a beautiful city.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 5 points 16 hours ago

And our parks levy ballot measure just passed!

I know it's a tangent, but oregon has one of the best Webcam setups I've ever seen. Tripcheck

[–] StopSpazzing@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

Wow. Thank you for sharing!

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sadly, they aren't all old. The alt-right recruitment drive that's been running for the last decade or so has borne a lot of fruit.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 25 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Yup.

Starting to think GenZ/Alpha aren't going to save us. Not the men anyway. They're buying into that dogshit hook, line, and sinker.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Millennials are the last generation to not be raised by an algorithm, and also seemingly the only generation that doesn't get more conservative as they age, so I guess it's up to us to save the planet.

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Millennials are getting more conservative as they age, at least in the US. We thought this might be true during Trump's first term when the age gap in voter behavior was so large, but millennials were delayed in reaching the wealth milestones like homeownership and to a lesser degree childbirth. We weren't shut out entirely.

As millennials reach their peak earning power we will get more conservative still. The fact of the matter is that being poor shortens your life and being rich stunts your empathy. Individuals don't change their politics much. As time passes the poor die off from the generational cohort and leave the rich conservative assholes.

Wealth concentration to the rich will push each succeeding generation left as a greater proportion of people are locked out of wealth accumulation, but that has a few generations to go before the limits and a tip into facism is always possible as we see right now.

Young men need mentors and someone to help them un-weave the confusion that media sows. Give them someone who listens, can relate, and sets an example; so they stop running to extremists voices who are more than willing to accept them and talk to (at) them

Listen, teach, be an example for other young men. Nobody should be in this alone and we can't allow young people to slip through the cracks, because someone will be waiting to "help them", for better or worse

[–] phx@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Not just young men. I'm in the 40+ range and Canadian yet still have at least one friend who's getting his info from something like Fox and numerous relatives who seem to have succumbed to the brain-worm since Covid

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Tbf, Gen Z just has a more "doomer" mindset, they don't care anymore, they'd happily vote for a far-right, or even a socialist or a communist. I mean 60% of Americans have a positive view of Socialism. Its not really Gen Z being right wing, they are tired of the current system and is deparate for change, ANY change. So... lets hope they don't choose change into the wrong direction.

[–] PlanterTree@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 hours ago

ANY change.

Is this because of the housing crisis? Where houses are getting more expensive faster than wage growth and inflation? Or is it immigration even for the younger generations?

[–] PissingIntoTheWind@lemmy.world 18 points 21 hours ago

You should see the racists from my shit hole county. In northeast Pennsylvania. Legit going out of their minds. And saying shit like their 20k a year income could ever afford them a life in NYC. Like sit down Tony. No one cares what you and your 41bmi has to say. Maybe take care of your health before you open your mouth.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 41 points 1 day ago (50 children)

I hope what we take most from this is that 2026, 2028 is NOT "too early" or "too high stakes" for an ACTUAL progressive campaign. The DNC has used that argument 3x with Trump and lost said elections twice (only winning 2020 because Trump bombed w/ Covid-19). I'm certain we'll hear it again in the next two national elections.

Having a competent populist leftist politician is not a detraction. Quite the opposite. NO to Gruesome Newsom

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

If AoC wins the primary I'll vote for her.

If Newsom wins the primary I'll vote for him.

I'll be donating to AoC's campaign though.

Republicans are scared shitless that people will get another taste of socialism like they did with the wildly popular FDR..

Every 60 seconds in New York, a minute passes.

Unfortunately, it's not just old or white people. Just look at the young GOP Nazi club or all the latinos that voted for Trump

R/conservative is really funny right now. They're clawing their own eyes out over literal NYC just because it's Daddy's favorite place

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 53 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (7 children)

Psyched for Mamdani and NYC but it's hard to believe how many people voted for a sexual harassmer who is also openly corrupt

Well we do have a child diddler for a president.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Is it "hard to believe" when the Americans voted twice to elect a full on rapist for President?... with the added qualifications of convicted felon, fraudster and 99.99% likely a pedophile?

I think it's time to accept Americans could not care less about sexual assault, women or kids rights.

Yes, that is a generalization with a nasty connotation but that is what Americans have shown to be

It's quite fascinating that, on the one hand they think everything he tries will fail and he won't achieve any of the things he promised, and at the same time they also think his policies will destroy New York City and all the business will leave.
