I wouldn't like US troops living of our social welfare services

The German government said in October that it would take over the payment of some 11,000 local employees at US military facilities as a show of good faith, anticipating repayment when the shutdown was resolved.

What about this? Hoping to get the money back from the current administration seems...naive...

You can say that again

True, but as a German, I would rather have them fed than starving, even if it's on my money. If this would continue for too long, we would have to think about closing those facilities. But let's wait and see what happens.

As a fellow german I say let em rot and have private donations take care of them.
The people may be our friends, but we shouldn't show compassion towards the united states.

The people of the United States are not the government of the United States. I agree with you, we shouldn't give Trump anything. But those are human beings living in our country.

That's why I say private donations. I'd donate. Just not the damn state.

I understand not wanting anyone to go hungry just on principle, but can I ask about the general sentiment regarding the troops there? Are they viewed positively? I don't think I'd take kindly to a group of foreign military personnel around my city, even if they were from an allied country.

They've been there for more than a generation, and they're not occupying the country, they're basically just a group of weird neighbors

Everything is normal when you grow up with it, and their contact with the troops is going to be exclusively when they're off duty and likely looking to spend money

And the burgers around the base are the best in town
