I've been using HA for about 6 years. I run it on an Intel NUC, inside a Docker container. On the Docker host I also run containers for NodeRed, Mosquito MQTT, Zigbee2MQTT, and about a dozen other containers. My nodes consist of:

  • 14 Shelly devices
  • 35 ESP32 microcontrollers with ESPHome firmware (mostly environmental sensors, but also a custom humidifer controller, garage door controller, power usage meter, etc).
  • 93 Zigbee devices (Hue lights, GE/Jasco Zigbee paddle switches, a few remote controls) on one Zigbee2MQTT network and 14 devices on a separate Zigbee2MQTT network.
  • 3 WLED controllers for RGBW strips.

Despite the complexity, everything surprisingly works great. So I've been wondering if there's a practical limit to the size of a home automation network? (It's worth mentioning that I have a very robust wifi and Ethernet network in place).
