Its really a shame that he's such a cunt. His music is great and it saddens me that its inseparable from such a shitty person.

Totally agree. This type of situation kinda ruined extreme metal for me. Like every time I find a new band in black / brutal death / slam etc., you have to make a background check to be sure they're not literal nazis... It's annoying, ruins the vibe and it's simply hard to even know sometimes. I'm still pissed that I bought a Disma album on Bandcamp before knowing about their singer bs.

Because of that, it pushed me to listen to and enjoy more punk hardcore band, as they are usually upfront about their much better and positive political view (antifa, straight edge, feminist, etc.).

Some vetted black metal recommendations from me: Spectral Wound, Zeicrydeus, Marrow of Man, Summoning, Traktat

Edit: since my comment is getting some interest, I figured I could share the links:

Summoning - epic atmospheric black metal about Tolkien's universe, Austria - this is the only recommended band here that is not explicitely leftist. One member is leftwing, the other is rightwing, but not far-right.

Zeicrydeus - unusual kind of black metal with hellenic influences about a fantasy universe, QC Canada

Marrow of Man - black metal with great song writing, Netherlands

Spectral Wound - black metal, QC Canada

Traktat - black metal with an antifascist theme, Germany

Punk is nice, except when I'm listening to anarchist punk and then youtube music adds nazi trash to the playlist...

"This person is getting radicalized in the wrong direction. We need to fix that."

The emphasis on making her look young with the hair and outfit is just fucking creepy to me.

Dude is the wiki like… irresponsible in its silence on this?

I’ve been trying to learn about metal (genre, history, types, etc) recently, mostly through listening, and haven’t listened to burzum yet or even heard about him. But when I went to the wikipedia article there’s no mention of any WS keywords save for the name of his label, which lays open his ~~shiftiness~~ shittiness. Did he sue or something?

I'd like to recommend the mighty Metal Archives to you! Great tool for research purposes.

Thank you so much for this! I’ve already made a few playlists based on the user rankings and reviews.

The OP caught my attention because a big concern of mine with the genre was the association of some of it with WS, so the wiki not mentioning it at all freaked me out a little.

To explain a bit, most of my family members are Norwegian-Americans, and while none of them have WS leanings that I know of, they’re still mostly living around other Scandis. I’ve noticed a lot of hate groups have sprung up in those places, and a lot of metal bands are either Scandinavian or reference norse mythology. I just have some phobia to any potential WS shit, since they have more than once caught me unaware. I was finally convinced to give metal a chance by an Indian-American coworker and an African-American partner, both huge metal heads, who insisted that was not what the music was about.

Thank you again for the resource. Some of these reviews are hugely informative of context and influences.

Ngl, as a decades long metal head, you're probably better off ignoring burzum except as a meme. Seriously, it ain't worth it musically. I mean, they were kinda foundational to an extent, but not good, if you get me.

Early Bathory is a much better place to start down the black road, imo.

Didn't Varg send death threats to the singer of Bathory? I remember something about it, might not have been Varg, specifically, though

Yeah, I was at least 2000 words into the wiki thinking that I could be down with the church hating Tolkien nerds, before it became obvious to me that they’re, like, ultra racist. I’m sure there are dog whistles, but they went over my head. This is a pretty descriptive line explaining why varg doesn’t call himself a Nazi anymore:

Among other things, he did not wish to be associated with anti-Slavic sentiments.

Anyone know the source? You know, for research purposes, of course.
