The 'Steam is a pseudo monopoly' thread was NOT like this. It was a bunch of commenters simping for Valve and Gabe, even here on Lemmy.

...Which is why they can charge 30%, and Gabe has a few mega yachts.

If only Valve was a public company and we could get a real look in their finances. I think many people would have a very different opinion of them. My little conspiracy theory is that this lack of transparency is why they’re flying under the radar of EU Digital Markets Act as they sure look like a gatekeeper.

Gabe's company isn't publicly owned, but he clearly made his billions putting his money into the stock market, probably hedge funds.
