I'm always curious while sitting in my home office when I hear a plane fly overhead, and wanted something to announce on my speakers what the plane is and some details about the flight. So I built this automation!
What it does:
Whenever a plane flies overhead below 15,000 feet (and I'm home), my voice assistant announces details about the aircraft using ChatGPT to generate natural-sounding descriptions. It includes the airline, aircraft type, route, altitude, and speed. If it's something special or vintage, it'll call that out too!
Example announcement:
Features:
- Real-time monitoring via FlightRadar24 integration
- AI-generated announcements (no robotic template responses)
- Time-based filtering (only during daytime hours)
- Presence detection (only when you're home)
- Smart volume management
- 5-minute cooldown to prevent spam
- Converts airport codes to actual city/airport names
Requirements:
- FlightRadar24 Home Assistant integration
- OpenAI Conversation integration (ChatGPT)
- Voice assistant or media player for TTS
Perfect for aviation enthusiasts or anyone who's curious about what's flying overhead!
