Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

"We will track your location just this once to mail programmer socks also."

    [–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago

If I was getting programmer socks in exchange for my personal data I wouldn't care so much about privacy.

Depends on what you consider "working", having my calculator and browser load for a minute or two before being able to do anyting and being unable to keep a specific software version as long as I need to doesn't really work for me.

    [–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 1 points 4 hours ago

Never had those problems! I've locked certain software versions before. But, every user has different needs. :)

    [–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

I am obligated to inform you that I run linux.

    [–] sonofearth@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

I use Arch BTW β€” just in case if Arch has that in their terms.

    [–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I don't tell EVERYONE. I just tell my coworkers and friends...

    [–] robocall@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

You have family, neighbors, people in the parking lot that you are obligated to share your wisdom with

    [–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 15 points 20 hours ago

    Steam Deck Users be like:

    "arch btw"

    [–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 11 hours ago

somewhat oddly, in the real world, a clause like this would make the program no longer free and open source software

    [–] DivineDev@piefed.social 20 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The first rule of Linux is you talk about Linux. The second rule of Linux is do talk about Linux.

    [–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

1st rule of Kernel club is you talk about Linux. 2nd rule of kernel club is you never talk about gnu

    [–] ikidd@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago

    Ouch, that hurds.

    [–] henfredemars 64 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    This doesn’t look like Arch.

    [–] renegadespork@lemmy.jelliefrontier.net 51 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Debian users will eventually tell everyone, but it’ll take 2 years before they see the question.

    [–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Gentoo users would too, but their social skills are still compiling

    [–] url@feddit.fr 35 points 1 day ago (4 children)
    [–] mech@feddit.org 1 points 7 hours ago

You should switch to Bazzite btw

    [–] promitheas@programming.dev 16 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

My first lemmy account was on an instance called iusearchlinux.fyi then it just disappeared suddenly and without explanation (admin probably burnt out). Anyway, it was nice to be able to tell people i use arch linux without actually having to tell them. I miss that instance

    [–] dil@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

I tried hosting for myself and 6 months in it was hitting memory limits (prob because of friendica and sharkey on the same instance) Did not care enough about hosting my own content to deal with that.

    [–] mech@feddit.org 3 points 7 hours ago

The server it ran on crashed after an update, and the wiki doesn't mention recovery of a lemmy instance.

    [–] Kaiserschmarrn@feddit.org 9 points 1 day ago

I'm using CachyOS which is based on Arch btw.

    [–] Venat0r@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I tried it but TF2 wouldn't launch so I switched to Ubuntu.

    [–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    [–] Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 11 hours ago

If a user doesn’t learn how to manage nvidia proprietary drivers on arch, they probably are in a better home at ubuntu

Assuming that this was the problem…

    [–] henfredemars 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I installed TF2 on a Mac with only integrated graphics in college and played a ten to twelve FPS slideshow for years.

    It was Debian as well.

    [–] Venat0r@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I've been playing it on and off since launch and never got less than 60fps πŸ˜…, but generally around 120fps as I had a 3d vision monitor(that didn't work so well in source games though iirc).

didn't get as far as seeing a framerate in arch, couldn't work out why it wasn't working and gave up πŸ˜…

haven't checked my framerate in Ubuntu but felt like about 144 or something like that

    [–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 20 hours ago

Q: A crossfit trainer, a vegetarian, and a Baptist Christian walk into a bar. How do we know?

A: They told every god damn person in the bar within the first 5 fucking minutes

    [–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can also add airplane pilot to that

    [–] dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

    [–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

    [–] thatradomguy@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

    [–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's because these are GUI users, the real TOS is written in an arcane format only viewable by a cat or a bat.

    [–] hansolo@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    [–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)
