If you bought it without ads and it started showing ads, that would be a breach of contract.

In purchasing this appliance you agree to our TOS that says we can change our TOS arbitrarily. Also you can't sue us because you've also agreed to arbitration

At least they don’t lock the fridge until you watch an ad.

Just wait until buggy malware worms its way into these things and the screen just shows kernel panics in an infinite loop.

Edit: or worse, somebody hacks it to play random hardcore porn videos.

No, thanks. I'll stick with my long-since-paid-for, 25-year-old Maytag. That is, as long as it works.

I recall reading in Consumer Reports many years ago that most refrigerators were discarded not because they stopped working, but because of cosmetic damage. Broken plastic door shelves, dents, rust, out of style, etc. The compressors were still fine.

I would return it

Imo this is not so much infuriating as it is just straight up ridiculous.
Don't bloody buy smart appliances. If you happen to have one, switch off its connectivity. If you insist on local connectivity, isolate it from the web. If you insist on using the internet connectivity of your home appliance then you deserve every bit of the nonsense that is thrown at you

To be more accurate, the ads only appear in specific cases where idiots were dumb enough to buy a fridge with a screen.

after seeing pluribus that ad has a whole new meaning
