1st thought: they are expecting the bubble to burst any day now and isolate their other businesses to be free from the (heavy)damage

nokia is a very diverse company. they make everything from rubber boots and car tires, to cardboard, to undersea cables, to modems. this is likely not a big part of their business.

they make everything from rubber boots and car tires,

They don't. That company is called Nokian Tires and it's a complete different company.

Rubber boots are actually a different company too, Nokian Jalkineet Oy and it's owned by Berner

I'm going to opt to trust the guy whose name is literally Finnish for boot (or Estonian for "in the boot")

Yes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Nokia might have some of the history and why the name of the town is tangled in several almost unrelated companies.

[โ€“] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 2 weeks ago

they were the same company up until pretty recently. i'd missed the split.

But nvidea didn't invest in Nokia because of those things

[โ€“] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 2 weeks ago

no, they probably did it because nokia is a market leader in communications technology. but since they are a global fortune 500 member, a billion is not that much.

The fuck is an AI-first mobile network

Randomly stops working when it decides it shouldn't even though you really want it to?

I'm not a fan of apples AI first battery optimisation. It seems to mostly be good at ignoring me when I know I'll have a long day and put my phone in battery saver mode. In this case though, I have information the phone doesn't (my usage pattern is about to change) and I can't think of any interactions like this on a mobile network

AI collecting all your calls and messages data for training and surveillance.

Title is misleading, or maybe even totally wrong. There is no spin-off, everything inside Nokia got joined together into two main units. Total opposite of a spin-off
