Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is still Palestine, though we will switch next week to a new country.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The weekly (biweekly?) update is here.

Links and Stuff

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

Al Jazeera:

Crypto firms not doing enough to stop ‘illicit finance’: US
The United States says some companies in the digital-asset space are not doing enough to stop the flow of illicit finance – a subject that has come under renewed scrutiny during the Israeli war on Gaza.
US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, speaking at an event in London, said the “vast majority” of financial institutions want to help root out “terrorist” financing.
But, he added, “There are those, especially [in] the digital asset space, who wish to innovate without regards to its consequences, including protecting against illicit finance.”
“Our expectation is that financial institutions and digital asset companies and others in the virtual currency ecosystem take steps to prevent terrorists from being able to access resources. If they do not act to prevent illicit financial flows, the United States and our partners will,” Adeyemo said.

I'm just curious... has anyone found anything?

Rybar end of day sitrep (before the raids started) October 23, 2023

spoiler❗️🇮🇱🇵🇸 Escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone - update as of October 23, 2023

Last night, the Israel Defense Forces carried out a devastating attack on the Gaza Strip, causing extensive damage to civilian structures, including residential buildings, a mosque, and nearby buildings close to two hospitals. The local Ministry of Health reports that the death toll has risen to over 430, including 182 children.

A third convoy of humanitarian aid has entered the enclave through the Rafah checkpoint. However, the Israeli authorities are still blocking the entry of fuel into the Gaza Strip, which is negatively impacting the functioning of hospitals, desalination plants, and power plants.

There are reports of ongoing negotiations between the parties for the release of 50 hostages, including individuals with dual citizenship and foreigners, held by Hamas. Two prisoners have already been released through the mediation of Egypt and Qatar. It is possible that the militants may demand fuel supplies in exchange for further releases.

Palestinian factions have once again launched attacks on IDF positions along the border with the Gaza Strip, targeting areas such as Sderot, Nahal Oz, Kissufima, and Sufa. In addition, two kamikaze drones attempted to attack the IDF bases at Hatzerim and Ts'eelim, but were successfully intercepted by air defense systems.

Israeli bombardment ongoing across Gaza, residential buildings destroyed

Tareq Abu Azzoum reporting from Khan Younis, Gaza

Israeli drones are hovering above and Israeli jets are moving from one area of the Gaza Strip to the other.

In the north, a residential building was flattened, in which 16 Palestinians were killed. Attacks are also continuing in central Gaza, where two residential buildings were hit in Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood.

The Israeli air force has renewed attacks in the surrounding areas of al-Quds Hospital in order to intimidate people at the hospital, in order [to force them] to evacuate and leave the facility.

In the southern part of the territory, a residential building was levelled to the ground.

Some recent updates at the NYT - https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/27/world/israel-hamas-war-gaza-news

With an apparent digital blackout in Gaza, some Palestinians who have still managed to communicate with the outside world said that fear and panic were spreading about what the Israeli military could be planning as airstrikes intensified.

---

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that it has completely lost contact with its headquarters in the Gaza Strip and is “deeply concerned” about the ability of its teams to continue providing emergency medical services, and for residents’ ability to call for ambulances.

---

Two major Palestinian mobile networks, Jawwal and Paltel, have announced that their phone lines and internet services are down following the intense new strikes. In the last hour, reporters have struggled to reach residents of Gaza by phone. Most if not all phones appear to be disconnected.

---

The Israeli military has begun a particularly intense round of strikes on Gaza, according to three military officers and an Israeli government official. The barrage includes missiles fired from warplanes as well as shells fired from artillery, the officers said. The barrage occurred as Israeli leaders have been deliberating about how to conduct a ground invasion of Gaza and as diplomats conduct backchannel talks to free hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Islamic Resistance in Iraq video of one of their missile launches against US base. Not very impressive but I thought it's notable as we haven't had any videos from them so far.

“In recent hours, an aerial threat was spotted in the Red Sea region. Combat helicopters were scrambled in response to the threat, and this matter is now being investigated,” chief [IOF] military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

“To our understanding, the strike that took place in Egypt originated in this threat,” he said in a televised briefing.

An "aerial threat", making up new terms to deflect.

Full update

The Israeli army has said that an “aerial threat” had been spotted in the Red Sea region and linked this to a projectile that landed on Egyptian coastal territory there.

“In recent hours, an aerial threat was spotted in the Red Sea region. Combat helicopters were scrambled in response to the threat, and this matter is now being investigated,” chief military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

“To our understanding, the strike that took place in Egypt originated in this threat,” he said in a televised briefing.

“Israel will work with Egypt, and the United States, and bolster regional defences against threats from the Red Sea region,” he added.
