Confused as to how Patton figures in there, because I don't hear anything from him. This seems identical to the album version. Is there something wrong with my headphones?

Yeah, I think he's just on Orc and Soulympics from that album. I think he toured with them though and people love him so no wonder he tends to get stuck in the title. More people click on Mike Patton's name than something like "Zu - Carbon"

I think it's the ambient "keyboards" and such in the background during certain sections.

Apparently Patton did both vocals and 'electronics', but, as zecg mentioned, not on this track.
