I've made my first server part list which I plan to upgrade the RAM for when needed and the drives if I need to. Are these parts balanced?

I plan to use TrueNAS Scale with the XCP-ng hypervisor and VMing programs to my laptop.

Storage will be ZFS. I only have < 256GB of data so my two old hard drives with an external HDD backup will be enough (if this works). The SSD will be the OS drive.

How much can this build scale and are there any bottlenecks?

The case, CPU cooler and SSD have already been bought.

Thanks.

Me 2 cents... First off, I understand the limitations of availability in Australia vs USA or Europe. I'm in Japan which presents its own pricing issues, especially with energy usage.

  1. The case, go with something cheaper and versatile, even if it's used (but in good shape). For example, if you don't mind a big case, I'm a fan of the Define R5! You can even upgrade the fans when needed and it has 8 3.5" drive bays built in plus other space. (I just searched Gumtree and it wasn't promising for that case, but you get the idea)

  2. I don't know why you specced out 2.5" drives. 3.5" are cheaper, higher density, and easier to buy. Are you going for a small quiet NAS? Then why the larger case?

That's a nice case. I already bought my case and I'm glad I've got it. I've just got to modify a bookshelf so it can fit. It's not too close to where I sit so the noise might not be an issue.

More drive bays would have been good! I'll have to get some extra bays to put in my case.

The 2.5" drives are what I already have. I don't have a lot of storage requirements yet so new HDDs will be for later. Thanks for the tip.

You've not actually started what your uses are for the machine.

Which vehicle is better, a Duramax 3500 or a Chevy Bolt?

Both excellent vehicles with hugely different use cases.

I haven't explored very much what I'll do but I want to be able to play Minecraft on my laptop (which it crashes now when I load it). I'm also getting a 1660 GPU for the server to transcode to the laptop.

I also want my laptop to not run out of RAM when using Chrome so I will VM from the server.

I'd like to run my storage.

Cezanne doesn't support ECC udimms or rdimms, you can get standard 2x16gb kits for around $100 AUD. If you wanted to go with ECC youd need matisse or vermeer (zen2 and zen3 CPUs; such as a 5600)

Also that CPU doesn't have integrated graphics so might be worth picking up a cheapish video card like a GT 710 or something.

Oh my! I didn't read the motherboard spec properly. Thanks for that!

It looks like I can only use one RAM slot at 3200Mhz anyway. Would it be worth going down to 2667Mhz RAM to retain ECC? If I can find that kind of RAM.

I will probably get a GPU.
