As a long-time cat lover, I'll tell you something else I witnessed: when a female cat is in heat and too many tomcats are waiting for their turn, sometimes one tomcat ends up mounting another out of frustration and overexcitement - and it usually ends up in a nasty reaction from the tomcat being mounted, but not always.
So cats are not just polyamorous when enough hormones are flowing.
I've been in that situation, too. :3
iirc the whale mating situation that people witnessed a few years ago is the same thing. sometimes its just 2 horny dudes getting off.
