If you want something fast paced, recent, and ok with scifi, I suggest Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It’s a quick and fun read, I highly enjoyed it. The movie just came out, so you can watch that then compare the two. So far, folks have said it’s a good adaptation, I am seeing it tomorrow.
That would take a fair bit of time out of your boredom.
Agreed. Great for literally anybody of any tastes. Easy read that’s fun. Bonus is the audiobook is very good as well.
That is one I was going recommend. Also The Martain is also good.
Another book recommendation is Children of Time by Andrew Tchaikovskuly. The whole series is pretty good. Currently reading the 4th book in that series that just came out.
Also going tomorrow! Just finished reading it a few weeks ago. It wasn't a 5/5 for me but I think it will make a good movie, I'm excited.

Great book. It’s about the story of the invention and proliferation of the telegraph.

Curious why the downvotes.
Probably because the "5 social-process levels" sounds like some culty pseudoscience mumbo jumbo. There are a ton of snake oil books claiming "if you do what I say you'll solve all your problems and the world's too." There is no simple hidden trick to solving all the world's problems.
Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
Kind of like Ocean’s 11 in a fantasy setting with some of the best snarky dialogue I have ever read.
This is both wonderful and terrible advice. I just want the next book. I don't think it's ever going to happen.

I'm actually not even mad on this one. The books are standalone enough that I won't feel slighted if the next one never comes out.
The Remaining by DJ Molles. It's the first book in one of my favorite series. The first series has 6 books, there is a follow on series with 6 books, and there are 4 stand alone novels and a prequel following that. Awesome concept with realistic, flawed characters and lots of gruesome post-apocalyptic action. chef kiss
