Pretty much the title. I've seen plenty of people using proxmox and truenas but I don't really see many homelab users running Ubuntu server or something similar? Do many people actually use it to run docker or any containers on their machines? Just curious.

Most of my servers are Ubuntu.

[–] encryptedhashes@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I do. A lot of people running it don’t need to post with basic questions.

[–] BrainInCoffy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu (minimal) to make virtual machines easily using Terraform + CloudInit

[–] gganno@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to use Ubuntu bare metal with docker containers until I switched to unraid for my main/media server. I still use Ubuntu for my game servers as I use AMP to manage those.

[–] skywalkerRCP@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I started with it now use Proxmox with a few Ubuntu Server LXC.

[–] cantenna1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Years ago, for a few years.

What I disliked most was distribution upgrade.

Ubuntu pacakages using non bleeding edge parts

Using repositories.

Now I use Arch Linux on all including the Server, Arcade, etc. It's superior for so many reasons.

Learning Openstack for work. Running Ubuntu 22.04.3

[–] spanish4dummies@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I do. Also have Docker/portainer on it.

[–] thefanum@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Absolutely. I build servers professionally, so it's where I'm comfortable and snaps are AMAZING on servers.

Still kinda meh on Desktop, but they're winning me over there too. Begrudgingly lol

[–] Nix-geek@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It used to be my go-to, until the unity desktop and snap...

I found both annoying so I left.

[–] KN4MKB@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's funny to throw proxmox and true nas in comparison because that's like comparing cars to wheels. Basically all those proxmox installs are probably running various Ubuntu VMS

[–] NoodleCheeseThief@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Legit question, what are people using 5,6,7 Linux servers at home for that they couldn't do with one or two?

[–] danielholm@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have used Ubuntu servers on bare metal and of late also as VMs, since Ubuntu 5.10.

[–] unidentified_sp@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run TrueNAS Scale which in turn runs two Ubuntu Server VMs with PCIe passthrough NICs.

[–] Emotional_Orange8378@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

all my linux servers are ubuntu servers. if for nothing else, consistency in operation and control, scripting across all of them is the same.

[–] ztasifak@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can someone please elaborate on the differences between „ubuntu server“ and „ubuntu“? I assume it is about different packages that are (or aren’t) pre installed by default. Can I assume that either installation can be adjusted to become the other by removing/adding packages? (Apt)

[–] lenicalicious@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use a bit of every flavor. Debian, Ubuntu, centos, freebsd, and a even a red hat. 🤷‍♂️

[–] Slinky812@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu bare metal with zfs and docker. I wanted a super low overhead and stable setup. I didn’t know about proxmox when I first started but there is nothing you can do with proxmox that you can’t do with some VMs or docker on ubuntu (a bit more complicated but not by that much).

[–] rilkman@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use an Ubuntu server running on a 2013 office PC with an i5-3470. Mainly used as a media server, seed box, file server, and Minecraft server all running in docker containers.

Honestly had no particular reason for using Ubuntu other than it being the only Linux distro I've used before. Didn't even know about TrueNAS or Proxmox when I started.

[–] Bordone69@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bookstack, tenable scanner, splunk… these are all Ubuntu vms in my environment.

[–] coltrain423@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I ran Ubuntu Server on VMs in Proxmox for a while, and those VMs primarily hosted services via Docke containers, but I’ve since migrated to Debian for reasons.

So… yes! Lots of us do! We just often virtualize it rather than running it on bare-metal. That way, we can run 5 ubuntu servers with one physical box - a common homelab limitation.

[–] SCP_radiantpoison@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I want to run an IRC chat and a virtual assistant so I'll probably run those in an Ubuntu server VM

[–] hidepp@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Probably there is some people here running VMs with Ubuntu Server in their Proxmox machines.

Loads of us run Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox.

[–] Pericombobulator@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Me too, on proxmox.

Crap ton of them as VMs, but bare metal? One workstation and one serve station.

[–] Last-Caterpillar-513@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to but have recently moved to Debian server.

[–] InstanceExtension@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu server as the base OS for my (pc based) pi-holes.

[–] ug-n@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Nearly every VM in my proxmox clusters are Ubuntu server. In my opinion it is a great OS for several services that didn’t require a gui. I like it more than debian

[–] j0hnp0s@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Legit question. What is exactly that draws you to Ubuntu over Debian?

The only thing that might matter for me is zfs support on the installer. But tbh I dont mind doing it manually. I treat my machines as disposable anyway

[–] baithammer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Debian doesn't install a gui by default, except for live cd and has a smaller footprint than Ubuntu.

[–] krissovo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Ubuntu and Photon server to run any Linux applications I need on VM’s like DNS and Grafana. I have started to use vSphere tanzu to run containers.

[–] YooperKirks@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu server on ESXi VMs
Xubuntu on laptop

[–] Donkey545@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Proxmox with both Debian and Ubuntu servers hosted on it. My fundamental choice for the distro in this situation is whether I can find more community use of one distro over another for the service I am hosting. At this point, I am more familiar with Debian, but I use ubuntu server for some things at work, so it is valuable for me to use it at home to build skills.

[–] boogiahsss@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu is my go-to linux OS that I have running as vm's on hyperV
Some uses are: uisp, haproxy, my webhosting machine, zabbix etc.

[–] unixuser011@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm going to catch some heat for this, but I personally can't stand Ubuntu. I don't know what is it about the system or envrionment but it just rubs me the wrong way. Fine with Debian but Ubuntu just sits wrong with me

[–] AHRA1225@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been using it for vm for school

[–] well-litdoorstep112@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not in my homelab but in prod, yes. I had a free 15yo box and two days to deploy my app there. Ubuntu Server was the first distro that came to my mind.

It was running for like two years without a problem until the company hired an infra guy who moved all the standalone servers(mine included) to VMs running on a proper rack mounted hypervisor server(or maybe a cluster of servers? IDK) with some backup strategy.

But the guy just took an image of the drive and put it in the VM so it's still running Ubuntu Server. And to this day there hasn't been any problems with it.

Once they had a power outage but fortunately for me the docker containers had autostart enabled so it all came back up. That's about it.

[–] GeorgeGedox@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to run ubuntu on all my server VMs mostly because of the updated repos but once I gave Debian a shot and saw just how lightweight it is I stopped looking back. The default repos still have most of what I need and if I need something specific I just add the repo.

[–] dk1988@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run proxmox, so I can have multiple VM's running Ubuntu Server.

Originally this was because I used my server to run Kubernetes, and then run my apps there (using MetalLB) but in the end it got too confusing, and I already use too much Kubernetes at work, so I opted for small VM's with the apps I really use (nowadays it's mostly Plex, and a VM for Docker containers).

[–] i_live_in_sweden@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not for Docker, but I use if for other things, have several VMs running Ubuntu Server.

[–] RubixKuber@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I run Ubuntu both in my homelab and in my development environments for work. Out of habit, mostly.

[–] jfergurson@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m not sure if I quali as a homelabber, but Ubuntu server is definitely runnning my Nextcloud as a snap package. Once I move it to proxmox it’ll still run as an os on vm, just to run the Nextcloud.

[–] Geoffman05@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I used to use Ubuntu VMs on Proxmox host but I’ve switched to Debian a year or so ago.

[–] Database_Traditional@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i'm using ubuntu server directly, no hypervisor, for my homelab

[–] Click-Beep@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ubuntu Server on my UniFi UAS-XG as my main HomeLab plaything, and Ubuntu Server on a Raspberry Pi 4B with a backup PiHole for when I break the main unit but I still need DNS to Google search what I just messed up.

[–] Fabri91@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm running two VMs on my Proxmox server:

  • a dedicated VM for running Docker containers

  • a "virtual Pi" of sorts for piVPN and piHole - this one is quite minimal running with one core and 1GB of RAM.

I've never ran Ubuntu server on bare metal, though, except maybe for a short while on a Pi.

[–] d13m3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I tried, don’t like it, it needs a lot of my attention, decided to buy unraid and spend time with my family.

[–] Oklahsam@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use it with for my containers. Portainer to manage the containers and the Docker volumes are located on a zfs dataset that replicates to my truenas server. Works great.
