Very interesting. Looks like it was quite a popular decorative element. Saw some nautilus shell in Jan Matejko's house-museum in Kraków. If i remember correctly, it was with like metal extension and partially galvanized, beautifully decorated with small [also metal?] figure of some child with a flute riding a dragon. Guess i have too much attention to details 👀
