NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Sunday offered a full-throated endorsement of Donald Trump’s military efforts against Iran and also said he expects the nations of NATO to come together to support Trump.

Rutte has consistently been supportive of Trump even as some of the leading European powers — noting that NATO is intended to be a defensive alliance — have expressed reluctance to help Trump with the Iran war, including with U.S. efforts to make the Strait of Hormuz safe for the passage of oil tankers.

Trump, for his part, has lashed out at NATO. “Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran,” he wrote on Truth Social on Friday. “Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices. So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!”

I hope Europe comes together to oppose Trump.

I mean... if NATO collapses and is replaces by some other alliance he will lose his job. Of course he's doing everything he can to preserver it.

What an idiot. Europe has nothing to gain in this war. Many leaders have already said it's not Europe's war. They just need to sit this out and the balance of power will swing in their favor.

Bark harder for Trump, Rutte

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 83 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

No. Fuck Trump. Fuck Netanyahu. This is on them. NATO needs to stay the fuck out of it.

[–] Saturnalia@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

I completely agree. I'm an American and I'm afraid for our future.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 17 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, Rutte does want to fuck Trump and maybe Netanyahu as well. Isn.t it obvious? He has a massive boycrush on Trump!

[–] Lucius_Sweet@lemmy.world 1 points 53 minutes ago

Mmm yes please daddy Trump. I get that his job as head of NATO is to placate and plamas the orange orangutan in charge of its strongest force but NATO is a defensive organisation and this is a poorly justified war of aggression.

Even Trump's own intelligence chiefs have disputed the nuclear rationale, the only credible explanation for why the USA is at war with Iran is because Israel told them to.

NATO better stay the fuck out of this. Fuck Trump and his bullshit distractions.

Oh that was never in the cards.

They may not have wanted Iran attacked, but they didn't like Iran either so they aren't exactly wanting to defend them either.

[–] JustJack23@slrpnk.net 30 points 21 hours ago

What do you mean, we are together. The only outlier is the US.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 26 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Rutte has been burning his credibility in my eyes at a alarming rate.

I get that he needs to do at least some level of ass kissing towards the US but he does it with his tongue very far up in there and with a weird eagerness. I don't understand what his strategy is with trump.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What credibility? He was always a racist piece of shit. Look up "brief aan de Nederlanders" ffom 2017.

Article on it (Dutch): https://www.bnnvara.nl/joop/artikelen/rutte-maakt-geen-illusies-alliantie-wit-en-zwart-nederland-gaat-er-komen

Fucking asshole that dude. Always has been.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What credibility?

Mostly stuff relating to Ukraine. Though I do have some complaints about him with that as well. But on the whole he's handled Ukraine related things agreeable.

Look up “brief aan de Nederlanders” ffom 2017.

I don't speak Dutch so I'll skip, I'll take your word for it. I don't respect him at all anymore, so there's really not much to gain to go through translating that stuff.

I don’t speak Dutch so I’ll skip, I’ll take your word for it. I don’t respect him at all anymore, so there’s really not much to gain to go through translating that stuff.

It can be boiled down to:

  • long paragraph about integration & friction
  • one sentence, "Act normal or go away!" ("Doe normaal of ga weg")

I have despised Rutte ever since that. And I was very disappointed in many Dutch people who seemed to shrug that off with "it's a thing we say in Dutch - when someone acts annoying on a party, we also say that". Yeah, no shit Sherlock. A party guest has a place to go to - their home. WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO GO WHO WERE BORN HERE? Or who fled from war?

It was a "lowest of the low" moments of Dutch racism. I have lived there for a couple of years, and I went in with positive prejudice, and left bitterly disappointed - the under-40 Dutch people in the cities are alright, but the older generation and those in the smaller villages were way more intolerant and way more racist that I was prepared for. And me being cis-caucasian, I heard all the shit-talk about foreigners because they thought they could speak freely around me.

My take is that he decided the best way to handle it is to go so far over the top that it's clear for everyone that what he's doing is a clown act

Playing it serious would actually be more hurtful to his reputation in the long run

[–] toad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

Fuck the NATO. Bunch of corrupted cronies

No. I'm not paying for this in additional taxes. Suck my fat return.

[–] Kn1ghtDigital@lemmy.zip 4 points 19 hours ago

Trump wants to rope in everyone to make ww3. There is no low he will not stoop to.
