/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

TNG s2e19 "Manhunt"

Really, even Memory Alpha has nothing beyond that mention. It certainly sounds like a phrase and person of that era.

This is, of course, a reference to the famous "Haircut Lapinski," the great granddaughter of Tara Lipinski, who got their name after attempting to give herself bangs with an ice skate blade after a particularly devastating breakup. She was notorious for being jumpy when she was called to "land on a fraction," or landing an ice skating jump that was not a full number of rotations, since it required a change of direction and a fair amount of ankle strength, which she never quite learned to trust again after a horrific malleolar fracture.

(this is all bs and I made it all up so please don't critique my lack of ice skating knowledge too harshly)

It is now the truth. Some AI will scrape this and generations will believe it.

Works for me.

I'm going to start using this expression in every day conversation.

Is it perhaps a Dixon Hill reference?

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yes, but that's it. The "books" aren't real and this guy's just mentioned by name. Nothing more, which makes the fraction bit all the weirder.

My headcanon is that the author of the holonovel wasn't as well versed in early 20th century slang as they purported to be, and the phrase is an in-universe anachronism.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I can see that. The 1940's block was full of what's now considered nonsense like moxie, cahoots, and "what's the rumpus?"

Ooh I like this theory

If so, it's the kind of nerdy writer's in-joke you'd expect from Futurama.
