The United States army announced last month that it would raise the maximum age at which Americans can enlist from 35 to 42 years to expand its pool of eligible candidates amid recruiting challenges in recent years.

An updated version of US Army Regulation 601–210, dated March 20, outlined the changes, including the elimination of rules requiring anyone with a single conviction for marijuana possession or drug paraphernalia to obtain a waiver to enlist.

The new age limit was announced during the US-Israel war on Iran, towards which young people have expressed widespread opposition.

The updated version of Army Regulation 601–210 officially takes effect on Monday, April 20.

Just use the ICE agents for this. They already have all the gear.

[–] FungiEnjoyer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 hours ago

It's the meaning of life, the universe and everything?

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

They think endless war is the solution to the question of life, the universe, and everything.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

I thought that answer was 42?

It's almost like the younger generations don't feel keen to join whatever misadventure their nation wants to go on during their service. Especially given the high likelihood that they'll be involved in supporting/committing fairly unambiguous war crimes and genocide. They've also watched generation after generation of veterans get sold down the river... how could they resist.

[The younger generations] also watched generation after generation of veterans get sold down the river…

General Benjamin Button probably wouldn't work out, anyway.

not enough fools willing to die for the Epstein cause?

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

They wanted to make sure don jr could serve /s

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 35 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

Jesus fucking christ. Most people who are 42 actually look and act like it. This won't end well.

For instance I'm 29 and I do not have the body of a soldier. Never have, probably never will.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 2 hours ago

I had the body of a soldier, but it took too much space in the freezer.

Yeah, I didn't want to die for an idiot government in my 20s, but now I don't want to and am not getting up and into a warzone. I'm too old for this shit and I'm already in my pajamas. And my feetsies hurt from walking too much and I'm full of cheese.

I don't care if a bunch of self-delusional 40 year old MAGAs think they're tough enough to go kill all those weak Iranians, and end up getting themselves killed. The more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned.

Canada's enlistment age has been up to 50 for quite some time now. Basic gets you into shape... Or it doesn't, and you fail out.

In the grand scheme of things this really doesn't seem like a big deal. I think it's newsworthy because it reflects a clear anxiety in the US Military about their inability to fill their recruitment numbers, but beyond that It's not really all that unusual.

[–] JordanZ@lemmy.world 13 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Well they already ditched/reduced a bunch of training last year.

Why would you need mentally sound solders…

Additionally, resiliency training has been removed entirely from the list of training tasks necessary for readiness. The training instructed troops on stress-coping measures for everything from individual challenges to dealing with family stress during deployments.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 9 points 9 hours ago

And that's an actual problem. That's kind of my point; why are people fixating on largely meaningless things like recruitment age, instead of very real problems like ditching mental resiliency training?

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

My body looks the right shape at almost 50, but my knees and shoulders would be fucked carrying the loads they require in infantry training. Probably also my back.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 7 hours ago

Good news is you don't need very much training to be drone fodder.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 59 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

They can change enlistment age ranges that require little to no ID requirement but they demand very strict ID requirements for voting. They are telling us how they think of us as meat crayons.

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 16 points 13 hours ago

People who vote, might end up voting for the “wrong candidate”, and we can’t have that now can we. People who enlist, don’t really have the opportunity to screw up like that.

Kill all the bugs!!

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

Somewhat relieved and disappointed I missed the cut. At my age, at this moment, I would consider it a sign from God if I got drafted. Hegseth and I worship different Gods I should add.

[–] RedRibbonArmy@sh.itjust.works 34 points 14 hours ago

Exploiting poor millennials aka millennials.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Jesus fuck, I wonder if the reenlistment age went up too? Apparently now I could enlist for a first time, even if I hadn't before. I can't imagine doing that shit at my age.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 9 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

I just turned 40 a few months ago. Luckily I'm Canadian and live in the UK, so this doesn't affect me....however my knees and back ache just thinking about it....

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

A comment up above says that in Canada the age limit is 50.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 hours ago

Good thing I live in the UK then

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Hell I'm 26 and my knee aches at the concept of this. I could probably ignore it but it still wouldn't be fun.

My knee is fucked from a badly judged jump in boy scouts when I was 14 or something, word of advice don't blindly jump through bushes there may be a perfectly angled rock sitting there waiting to fuck you up.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 hours ago

Oh, you sweet summer child. There's no "may be" about it. It's there, yearning for blood!

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You can still die. Thats all they need from you.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 hours ago

Meh, they can get fucked. I'll Conscientious Objector, or resort to sabotage. I'll fight for the abolition of the state, or against a US invasion of Canada on my own, but I'll never willingly be a foot for the Imperialist boot.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 15 points 15 hours ago

War profiteering. Follow the money

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

It would make sense to reverse the enlistment age so they'd start from the oldest and the lower it.
