Unfortunately education does not inoculate one against stupidity. I've met plenty highly educated idiots.

No vaccine is 100% effective, and cannot account for pre-existing deficiencies in capacity.

Academic intelligence is not the same as emotional intelligence, so this is no surprise.

It is known.

I would say it's a vaccine against ignorance. There's a difference.

Sure, specificity is important.

Aren't most elected officials not only college educated, but a good amount of them from prestigious schools, even?

[–] LemmysMum@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Education for me, not for thee. Class warfare is their bread and butter.

All nine supreme court justices are Ivy League graduates, specifically Yale or Harvard. It is almost impossible to get a clerkship in the appellate courts without one, and the appellate clerkship is how you move on to a position as AG or the Federal Circuit Courts.

Incidentally, the Federalist Society is a huge feeder for federal and state benches, and they recruit heavily out of the Ivys. So even within the most prestigious pair of schools in the most competitive legal environment, there is an in-group within the in-group that boosts your odds of moving up the chain.

Even if you don't learn that much, the social status and significance of completing an educational program protects people from exploitation

[–] LemmysMum@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Unless of course the educational program becomes the source of exploitation. Capitalists love this one simple trick.

[–] ghostdoggtv@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

In this economy, it's not the source

[–] LemmysMum@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago

Only because we can't afford it. 😂

"I did not vaccinate my kids, and the surviving one is quite healthy without them!"

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Overwhelming odds are that if you didn't get vaccinated you're still alive, because the virus is only particularly lethal to folks who have complicating conditions. Nevermind Long Covid. Nevermind complications that the disease will create for you in your next illness. The only thing we seem to care about is the Alive/Dead binary.

Even then, this sets up a nasty selection bias. The folks that lived through the disease will go on for hours about how the vaccine wasn't necessary (even actively harmful). The folks that are dead can't really voice a rebuttal.

Dunning-Krueger, tho. Education isn't a vaccine against stupidity. Look at Ben Carson or Nikki Hailey or Pete Buttigieg. Hell, look at Wharton Business School Graduate Donald Trump. You can be dripping in credentials and say some of the most pig-headed shit imaginable.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

You'd be amazed how ignorant someone can become, when they are being paid to not understand.

[–] LemmysMum@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Vaccinated people can still get sick when exposed to carriers. Though vaccines help reduce the effects of exposure, they do not prevent it, and a significant viral load will still overpower your immune system. This is why it's important to maintain regular booster shots.

Like their dead kids.
