It works on my Samsung Dex, perhaps this is an iOS issue
Apple
A place for Apple news, rumors, and discussions.
My guess is streaming services don't like screen mirroring, which is what Apple does with iOS. A solution for iOS would be to introduce screen extending with iOS like Samsung does with Dex, so it's not simply mirroring the screen anymore.
Most apps don’t allow recording.
Some apps don’t allow mirroring (Netflix ok with HDMI mirroring last time I used it 2 years back but some others nope)
Some apps don’t allow mirroring via AirPlay (Netflix says nah)
Some apps don’t allow or support AirPlay handoff (Netflix says nah use the app on the TV and cast instead, but Paramount for example hands off and plays in TV native player)
Even on macOS some apps refuse to show if the screen is mirrored without HDCP link.
Thing is with the max or plus sized phones, if you’re sat at a distance to the TV screen; your phone if you hold it up is probably a larger display from your perspective anyway. But not ideal when sharing the screen.
So we have 2 solutions in this house; one is the Apple TV box and we have that logged in to the apps. The other is MacBook Air for on the go. And granted neither of those are as nice as a portable USB-C display for an iPhone. But since I needed the MacBook for coding I now have it on hand
“we are having trouble playing this video right now”
no they’re not, they’ve simply chosen to not play it
It’s like those scammers who claim to have an emergency unless you send over money because their heart can’t handle the stress
Most even block mirroring!!! Super stupid!
Are you using USB-C to HDMI or AirPlay? I know a lot of services don’t allow this for some stupid reason, but idk if the new USB-C to HDMI behaves the same way as AirPlay always has.
iPhones disappoint.
DHCP protection
Probably. Have you tried with other devices? Screen mirroring is at its base definition, grabs your phone's screen data and relaying it to the TV ergo, screen recording for TV to use it.
Is this down to a mobile-only subscription issue? Not tried this with Disney+ as I have it on my Firestick anyway but another service I had a mobile subscription for wouldn’t allow me to mirror to another monitor, I assume to force you to pay for the full subscription.
I had no Internet yesterday (still no today), but si have saved some movies in the Disney+ in the iPad, same deal. I could get the audio on the TV, and the movie on the iPad
Is there a bypass for this?
Chromecast is an option
I’ve mostly stopped watching streaming content because of how inconvenient and inconsistent they’ve made things.
Chucked my tv. Reading books instead.
Occasionally watch a movie on my iPad.
Just go to streaming - it’s so easily accessible now, UIs can be made to look good too with a bit of effort.
Too many content providers, inconvinent access and increasing costs - not worth doing it legit anymore.
My lifetime plex pass is paying dividends
Nearly impossible to make screen cap memes of shows with these new streaming apps.
Right?! Which you’d think they’d want so people are talking about their show/movie. Like alright I guess I’m just going to forget this existed instead of making a meme from it and sharing
Piracy opens their arms.
Yup. DVDs from the library. I love movies and tv but books are the things that really change my perspective
A sub $20 android box will host all streaming services with zero inconvenience
I could have sworn that there were sketchy methods or cables that could spoof an HDCP single in cases such as this.
I may be misremembering that though or it was from a time before the standard was fully developed.
This is why Disney should pay their Product designers competitively.or at least hire good ones
They really need to force a correction into an update, for this. Screen mirroring is NOT screen recording. All we’re trying to do is watch the thing on another screen.
Your lack of understanding of digital media and copy protection is your source of disappointment.
The fire sticks and chromecasts devices exist cuz the money paid to allow them to operate. Get one.
Just use vpn no brainer.
You could get an Apple TV. I like mine
Yeah before I had an Apple TV I usually used an HDMI cable from my computer to watch streaming. Though a year or so back I was curious if it still was possible and almost all of the streaming services didn’t work through the HDMI cable from the computer.
or roku much cheaper airplay
Get a fire tv stick to solve this issue
As an iPhone user since the XS I like it but they really nerf what can be a smartphone
Time to 🏴☠️
Lmao if someone wants to record from a streaming service it’s probably super easy to bypass this. This is just made to annoy you
Just curious, what is the desired use case here? Streaming sticks are very cheap
It was just a curiosity for me. I'm perfectly content to just watch videos on my phone, but I wanted to see if it's feasible to mirror it to my wired only monitor in the off chance I want to watch in a bigger screen.
it because of licensing. some agreements don't allow to mirror to big screen. also external screens can be recorded so it's a way to protect the content
I only have Netflix and a Lenovo Tablet with Video out. I can watch Netflix on our UHD (non-smart) TV using Lenovo's Desktop Mode connected via type C to hdmi cable. I think Apple can implement Desktop mode too but I doubt if Apple would implement is since it will cannibalize their iPads.
I just tested it with the other steaming services I have.
Netflix, HBO, Prime Video, Apple TV+ all casted the shows no problem. It played the video only on the monitor, leaving playback control on the phone screen.
I’m using the Philippines version of these apps, some will be the same as the global build, some like HBO is a local variant operated by a third party, so your mileage may vary.
You’re sharing a lot of streaming services. 😉
Why need to deal with that? There is plenty of website to watch the show for free and mirror it all you want.
thats weird because in Poland on Disney+ it plays like normal on my monitor when I connect my iPhone to it
The future is now
There are devices which disable the hdmi security, but would be cheaper or better to buy a casting device instead id say
$20 android streaming box will fix all!
This also happens when you try to play Disney Plus on a projector because they think you’re creating a movie theater and over sharing. It’s so stupid, I just want Disney movies under the stars.. WHY DONT YOU UNDERSTAND US DISNEYYYYYYY
It doesn't work if you use mirroring, you need to use the monitor as a second screen. The video will then only play there and not on the phone. Not supported by all apps tho.
Oooooohhh!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free!
YOU ARE A PIRATE!
Is this also the case with iPad?
If you are using a non-brand cable with no certification whatsoever, that could be the reason as well. 2 yrs ago I bought an usb c-hdmi cable and the brand boasts authorized and certified DRM content mirroring.
