How do you feel about your purchase a year later? Do you care about the newer gesture controls not being available to you?

Day one owner, very happy. Has absolutely lived up to what I wanted/expected it to do. Also the Ultra Watch 2 is also probably the first time I’ve felt really happy with my current device, especially now it’s more expensive ($100 AUD more).

[–] BrewerShawn@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Don’t care

[–] ajpetix@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The gestures are just something I look forward to next time I upgrade. The GPU improvements are my biggest regret but even that isn’t huge for me. My 1st gen ultra is still great despite some of the odd UX changes in WatchOS 10.

[–] ColdSkalpel@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I bought used ultra specifically because new features aren’t convincing me to buy a new one

[–] Yugtabub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

No, the AWU2 is not worth the upgrade from the OG version. Will upgrade next year (if there are major enhancements)

[–] sanctimoniousfsck@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Feel the same. Only thing that would have given me more fomo is if they added a new (darker) color for awu2

[–] stoneshawn@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The double pinch gesture is always here, so I dont care about the nee version at all

[–] oliverjanda@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm totally happy with mine. The new one is a joke.

[–] gideonboxer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Really happy with mine. Battery is still great, still looks great as well.

Don’t care about any of the new features of the AWU2, not in the slightest.

[–] MeddlinQ@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Happy as clam.

[–] undercovergangster@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like I made a great decision getting the Ultra 1 last year. The gesture controls feel worthless to me. If I had the choice today, I'd probably buy an Ultra 1 on sale compared to a brand new Ultra 2.

[–] pm_me_your_pooptube@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I only picked up my AWU1 in June, but it certainly worth the money to me to upgrade to the AWU2, let alone for the newer gesture controls.

[–] Srihari_stan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (4 children)

I don’t think anyone in their right mind would upgrade to Ultra 2 from Ultra 1.

My Ultra 1 is still as good as new after 1 year. Battery at 100%, looks as good as new despite dropping it several times while running.

[–] CurrentSalt1713@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wait how are you dropping it when running? The reason I ask is because I just got a gen 2 partially to track my runs and wanted to know if I should be cautious in some way to not drop it running.

[–] jemesct@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They dropped their watch and body but blamed the watch

[–] Pretty-Bat-Nasty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I thought the drop was due to the air friction melting the band off due to running excessively fast.

[–] VanceIX@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

No one in their right mind should be upgrading their $800 watch for at least 3-4 years…

At least my perspective as a AWU1 owner, if it can’t last 4 years and maintain It’s longevity for that long it’s not worth it ¯\(ツ)

[–] Serotonin-_-Dficient@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My health insurance company pays for mine 🤷‍♂️ annnnnnd 800 isn’t a lot of money to some people. I’m not one of those people, but I definitely know some lol

[–] Addixt_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Are they the same ones that plan on working till they die to keep up with their shiny gadget collection?

After watching those durability tests online, (and having Apple care) I smack the shit out of my watch constantly to show people it’s near indestructible. Considering my career in psych involves restraining patients at times, durability is very important. And it performs like a champ.

I haven’t felt the need to upgrade.

[–] hades_cj@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Gen 2 user here. Don't think that the gesture is a game chager. I rarely use it. Most of the times I forget it exist. Only handy when I carry something or my hands are dirty and have to answer the phone.

[–] struggling4realsies@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I agree it’s not a game changer especially since there’s gesture support on previous watches but the times you used the feature is basically it’s intended purpose for most people. Gestures aren’t supposed to take over as the main way to control the watch.

[–] serialreadr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I upgraded from S7 to U2. I barely use the gesture. Not worth upgrade for this feature.

[–] AdministrativeAct902@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Don’t care at all. It’s all about the battery! Being able to go hiking using WorkOutDoors and the watches gps for 10 hours is just awesome!!!

[–] mikecaesario@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why would I? My watch is not a priority for me to upgrade every year, even the iPhones is not significant enough for me to upgrade every year. I came from the series 4 and I think I'll buy a new one when the Ultra 6 came out.

[–] Juck3r@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Absolutely not. The double tap gesture can be activated in the accessibility settings on my AWU1. My screen is plenty bright and my battery lasts for days. The AWU2 is enough of an upgrade for me.

[–] EnjammedOne@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just upgraded to an AWU1 from a series 3, and I’m happy I did. I got a good deal on the AWU1, and I selected it for the battery life. The pinch gesture works perfectly fine on it. I have no complaints.

[–] Ok-Status7867@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

gesture controls are available to both 1 and 2

[–] cantstandthemlms@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I pretty sure I would never remember to use the gestures…or I would do it wrong or the watch would be confused. More than happy to still have my ultra 1. It has been great!

[–] Sherlock-Holmless@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No doubt the Ultra 1 will remain solid for years to come.

[–] iamkhris@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m perfectly happy with my Ultra. There isn’t enough of a difference (for me) between it and the U2 and whether or not to upgrade was an easy NOPE!

[–] droidevo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only regret i have is that now i feel its too big. But nope, wasn't planning on upgrading. Going to hold off till this one dies on me.

[–] cp_mcbc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zero cares. 99% battery health. Some small battle scars but still performing and looking great. I wouldn’t use the gimmicky gestures

[–] Sheldonscott96@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Got mine a month ago for half the price (€500), it is second hand yes but the previous owner barely used it that is why he sold it. Upgraded from series 4, huge upgrade! I love this watch!

[–] lapinsk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

First 4-5 months were awesome, it was a battery tank. After that I went from easily getting over 72 hours to getting low 50s now. It's less special when I still have to charge it every other day like my old watch, now it just has a higher soc when I charge it

[–] 49thDipper@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bought mine in May. Zero issues. Zero regrets. It’s a damn fine watch.

[–] surfer451@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bought my Ultra on Black Friday after launch. It does everything I need it to; no sense upgrading. Honestly don’t use it nearly as much since watch OS 10. Stick to dumb watches these days aside from runs.

[–] emiliabow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Pretty good. No need for AWU2. Probably will wait for next gen - whatever that is or will be.

[–] tigerinhouston@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I awaited the Ultra 2 announcement. Bought a mint Ultra 1 for $450. I’m not missing out on anything.

[–] No_Impression9599@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No the new one is not worth an upgrade

[–] gadgetvirtuoso@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I only bought the 2 because my wife wanted the Ultra as well so I gave her the U1 and for the U2 for myself. It works great for her. We’ve been snorkeling in the pacific and Caribbean with them. I’m currently living in Ecuador and have the altimeter is a nice feature since Quito is at 9k FT.

[–] Dentedcars@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I upgraded from a series 3 I don’t think I’ll upgrade till it stops getting os support

[–] S0TA_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Zero regrets - had no interest in the ultra 2

My original ultra has met and exceeded my expectation since launch.

Jumped to it from a gifted s7 41mm

[–] yeahbuddy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Open box gen 1 for $525

Good by me, very happy with it.

[–] The_Cows_Are_Home@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Went from Ultra to S9. Realized it was just too big and heavy and I was not utilizing its full capabilities anyway.

[–] username_stolen_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I upgraded from a series 4 and yes for me it’s a game changer. But in hindsight I would have returned it and just gotten the ultra 1 used. The new gesture feature is not that useful, in fact I never have a reason to use it. There’s never been a scenario that I cant interact with the watch and have to use the double tap gesture. It’s quite useless tbh, and limited. I would not upgrade from ultra 1 fur sure

[–] HouseOfCloudsVS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Still love mine, the whole reason I went with it was for longer battery life life and a more durable watch. Both the battery life and durability have been great. I will upgrade when the battery starts to fade in probably a year or two.

[–] subaroobie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Love it. There's gestures?

[–] Furneaux_j@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Still love my ultra! Staying put until they give me a reason to upgrade!
