Has he been that good since he can’t cheat?

[–] L0lligag@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Cause it was Brady all along. There, I said it.

[–] OnceMoreAndAgain@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
  1. It's not like these come out of Bill Belichick's vagina as a clone of him. They're individual people each with their own set of experiences, opinions, and brains.

  2. I suppose teams are biased into thinking coordinators for a dynasty must also be likely to be good head coaches, so these Pats assistant coaches end up getting offers they don't have the skill set to handle.

[–] tforda10@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Short answer - Belichick is overrated. Brady made him not the other way around. Really easy to lean into a "just do your job" mantra with the best player of all time running the show. The 00s rhetoric of Old Billy being a GM/HC genius has not aged well.

[–] ElectionAnnual@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they try to be BB instead of trying to carve their own path. The hard nosed, strict stuff doesn’t work anymore, unless you have pedigree.

[–] VicDamonJrJr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because he’s overrated and was blessed with Tom Brady

Pre-Brady Bucs - Brady Bucs - post Brady Bucs

Combined with pre-Brady Belichek - Brady belichek - post Brady belichek

Combined with proof of bad drafting, and horrible legacy coaches proves this

[–] Bman1233@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (5 children)

He is the most overrated coach in football history. Lightning struck with Tom Brady and he rode that to legendary status.

The most interesting nugget is how "Do Your Job" bleeds into this. Not only is it a mantra for you to do the job you're assigned, it also says for you to NOT do any jobs you are not assigned. Basically, Bill keeps all of the actual HoF HC stuff to himself. Not because he's trying to be secretive but because he doesn't want anyone else wasting their time.

Brady tax I’m afraid

[–] Fancy_Load5502@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (7 children)

Bill is not a very good head coach, and is not able to teach others how to do it. Bill got very lucky to find Tom Brady, and had great success with him. But both before and after Brady, it becomes clear that Tom was why they won those games much more than Bill.

You can be an asshole as long as you're winning. When you stop winning, you're just an asshole.

Belichick is, famously, an asshole. But, he also has six Super Bowl rings and is a no-brainer Hall of Famer. However, he also lucked into maybe the greatest quarterback ever for literally every one of those SBs. Consequently, it's not surprising he can't replicate the same level of success post-Brady.

You look at guys like McDaniels, Patricia, BOB, etc. and it becomes obvious why his coaching tree is gnarly. Those guys are trying to impersonate Belichick without Belichick's track record of success, or the tools that built that track record.

If I were an owner looking to hire a coach, the last guy I would hire would be one from Belichick's coaching tree. It's not that his guys are bad coaches. I mean, they are, but there are plenty of bad coaches out there. It's that they're universally assholes.

[–] KushMaster72@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because there is no Tom Brady tree

[–] Praxos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because there’s only one Tom Brady. Mmmk

[–] drdrdoug@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

None of them had Tom Brady. And he no longer does as well -- and has teams that look like his coaching tree teams.

[–] Adam_THX_1138@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because Bill had the greatest quarterback of all time and it made him look like a much better coach than he actually is.

[–] 2Much2Touch2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We all know now Bill was riding on Tom's coattail!

[–] Tschmelz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they only take the hardass stuff and forget everything else. Bill changes his scheme to fit his talent, he's not trying to force anybody into a role they aren't suited for, or shit on them for not fitting his scheme, stuff like that. He's a flexible hardass when it comes to coaching.

Not to mention they forget the human element. Yes, Bill is a hardass, but you don't get players being willing to run through a brick wall for you just because of that. He's like a grumpy old grandfather. The one who's gonna bitch and moan, but helps you out with stuff as a kid. Meanwhile, Patricia and McDaniels (probably the most notable examples) are just pricks. They don't respect their guys. Belichick does.

[–] meowVL@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Isn't everyone bored of this yet? lol

[–] DiggingNoMore@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

He has purposefully trained them wrong, as a joke.

To make an analogy: I manage an IT team - do I pick devs that would make good IT managers, or devs that make good devs?

Bill doesn't hire on head coaching ability. I'm sure he's made a few of them look better than they are at their respective jobs, too.

[–] Cali-Texan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because he and his merry band of fat fucks are shite coaches who’s inability to manage games was hidden by Tom Brady.

[–] knightro2323@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Honestly asking this...What defensive coach has produced any kind of coaching tree. Belichick and Tomlin sure haven't.

[–] Lockhead216@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because bill was carried by Tom for the last 20 years.

[–] Lights_in_da_sky@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Lacks the fertilizer named Tom Brady

[–] RNGezzus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

"Imperect Fruit" is a strange way of saying "Failure"

[–] Decent-Temperature31@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Imperfect is a nice way of putting it

[–] Greatcouchtomato@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they embody the worst traits of Bill (hubris, alienating certain players, treating them like chess pieces), without any of the positives (some really great gameplans, and actually having decent interpersonal skills), and without also having the best QB ever (who also had GOAT level leadership and intangibles) to cover it up any flaws and get the team to buy in.

And even then, Bill has started to look like his assistants without Tom as well.

I'm not saying Belichick is horrible coach or anything but it really shows you how important having the right QB is.

[–] JasonPlattMusic34@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When the root of the tree looks suspect itself without the GOAT at QB, it only makes sense that the branches of the tree are mostly frauds. Patricia and McDaniels in particular were just assholes who didn’t know how to work with others.

[–] Fallofmen10@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

None had Brady. ez

[–] VariationNo7192@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I mean it’s pretty simple really. None of BBs coordinators took Tom with them.

[–] Skyline_BNR34@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No Tom Brady.

Although you’d think a defensive coordinator would be decent working under BB.

[–] anotherorphan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

they get hired by people who have spent their whole lives just covering their own ass. "don't blame me, he worked with BB." they don't look at the details when they can just drag that old line out. it's just the same old bullshit corporate mentality

[–] Puedoverla@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because other teams don’t have the best qb of all time

[–] JaydedXoX@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Tom Brady is WAAAAAY better than most people even think he is. He elevated everything, made other things look good, made up for mistakes etc.

[–] fragglebags@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Its rotten fruit. People pay extra for imperfect fruit.

[–] crashcap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

BOB and Brian Flores had pretty good tenures and are overall great coaches

[–] bl123123bl@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

BoB and Flores were good head coaches, this has always been an overrated dialogue

[–] Tabais123@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Reality is most coaches fail.

In Belichick tree it seems the coaches are often arrogant. Not sure they realize the Patriots way culture was a unique special circumstance that can’t be reproduced.

Dominique Foxworths podcast did a good job talking about it. You need a low round QB who starts a game manager. An underdog team that wins big which gels them together. Then that QB needs to become best ever while keeping the team attitude going.

The assistant coaches all seem to think they are the system and not that they are a product of the system.

[–] tmacleon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Cause Tom Brady made them

[–] B1G_Fan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The youtube channel Set the Edge had a great video on this question

The only thing I might add to the discussion in defense of Hoodie disciples is that teams can be awfully quick to fire a Belichick disciple if he doesn’t start winning relatively quickly like Belichick did in New England.

That desire to fire Belichick disciples frequently glosses over the fact that BB had a hand in building the team with Parcells that he inherited from Pete Carroll. The successful team that BB likely built in Cleveland before it left for Baltimore seems to suggest that NFL teams might benefit from being patient with some of BB’s disciples

[–] Ok-Coach899@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Brady was his maker. Nothing more nothing less

[–] JobRich1277@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because Brady

[–] Parents_Mistake3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

By no mean do I actually know, but my head cannon has always been he dosent actually let these guys call shots lol.

I mean look at the people who have recently came from the patriots. They aren’t just bad coaches they are utterly incompetent.

In all seriousness you could put a HS coach in McDaniel s shoes an he would coach the raiders to more wins atp in the season.

An so no one will ever change my mind, Bill hires these guys because they’re not good. In his mind he dosent really need them, why bring in someone who’s gonna voice an opinion against yours when you can bring in Duds like Patricia an McDaniels an have 100% control over your team.

It helps cause if something goes wrong, it’s why would Patricia do that. But when it goes right Belicheck is their for the praise.

But that’s just my opinion.

[–] mackinoncougars@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they didn’t have Tom Brady

[–] ForgingChaos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don't think there is one reason or one flaw that all caused all these guys to fail/wash out as HCs. I think Belichick has a system that works and teams want to copy it but when they hire these coaches they want to run their own system with their own ideas, and they just haven't been successful. I don't like Belichick at all but I don't think it reflects poorly on him.

[–] OMGDonutz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because brady covered for all of them.

[–] Gingerh1tman@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think Tom Brady was the brains of the org

[–] NotHarveySpecter1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bill had Tom Brady for 20 years. Without him his track record is on par with the rest of his coaching tree
