part of what makes him great is a lifetime dedicated to football. he cant teach a lifetime of reviewing tape and 50+ years of knowledge to the young guys.

[–] BreakfastSpecials@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Gonna go on a limb and say Tom Brady might’ve been a factor lol

[–] Troutmaggedon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Given the last three years, is this even a serious question?

[–] Dast_Kook@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just find another Tom Brady.

Bill Belichick is the classic dictators trap. Only hire underlings that are incompetent. That way none of them are smart enough to form a coup and oust him.

[–] HolyTythinEar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because he’s not in the business of trying to make his coaches Head Coaches elsewhere. He’s trying to win football games. You can argue that part of that is trying to help his coaches improve. But he has coaches in certain roles and only wants them filling that role. Plus the guys that left to be HCs elsewhere all try to be him instead of themselves. Instead of taking bits and pieces of what they learn from him and including it into how they run their teams, they’re trying to do exactly what he does. And it doesn’t work because they aren’t him. They haven’t garnered the respect because they didn’t have his accomplishments. It works for him because he achieved so much in his career. They try to be carbon copies of him without the accomplishments. I’m hoping Mayo sees that and tries to do things his own way while incorporating some of the things he learned from BB instead of just doing things the way BB does. I think he’s smart enough to know that but we’ll see.

[–] DolanDukIsMe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It seems the issue the article is trying to highlight is that BB’s assistants are too micromanaged to learn how to be a good coach because BB lives and breathes football (Why Tom Brady thrived in the patriots?). BB may just be that good and can be the only person who’s had success with this style of coaching. Also why would he change if having a coaching tree is more something to worry about legacy wise than game to game or season to season? Just get the guys who you’ll know will do their job and win games.

imperfect fruit

That’s an interesting way to spell rotten

[–] jedimissionary@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

BB coaching style was only successful bc he had a HOF qb who super driven and willing to be coached like that from the jump, since he was a late round pick with no hype. His coaches leave and try to be a the mean dick Bill is, but there’s no culture of this already and they don’t have the history of success where ppl are going to buy into this method. Patriot way works only for the Patriots bc of what Bill and Brady did. It’s failing now in NE not so much of the coaching style, but bc Bill is a lousy GM

[–] rueiraV@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The BB style is alienating. It requires a certain level of football genius to get away with.

[–] aprofessionalegghead@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Imperfect makes it sound like any of them were somewhat good to begin with…

[–] Majestic-Active2020@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They still cheat. No Tom Brady. Doesn’t bode well when you don’t have the aforementioned on your new team

[–] Noah_g99@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bill has a rare combination of bottomless football knowledge (defensively, at least) and a personality that is actually endearing to most players.

Pretty much all of Bill’s underlings have been uninspiring personalities without Bill’s depth of knowledge.

[–] Hollywood2037@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they cheated to win multiple super bowls on top of having one of the best QBs ever...

[–] jack121013@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

BoB and Flores are actually quite solid. I think flores should stay at DC like LeBeau. BoB just was such a shit gm he hurt his chamces as a HC, hes still a very good OC at the least

[–] Few-Lavishness869@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because Tom Brady can only play for 1 team at a time

[–] YesOrNah@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because it’s becoming increasingly obvious that BB is pretty overrated and was clearly carried by an all time great QB.

[–] Cool_Butterscotch_88@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fruit of the poisoned tree

Unfortunately for them the tb12 genetic marker, is recessive

[–] RealBatuRem@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

BoB, Crennel and Flores weren’t bad coaches, but were in bad situations/self-sabotaged.

[–] lcrickett4@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m starting to think you need that Brady seed

[–] HollywoodRS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He never shares the secrets to taping a team practice or sign stealing.

[–] PM_ME_BOYSHORTS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because he's not a good head coach. He's well under .500 when he doesn't have the greatest player in the history of football playing the game's most important position. A sub .500 coach probably isn't going to produce more great coaches.

Belichick is an all-time great defensive coordinator, but it's extremely evident that Tom Brady carried his offense for 20 years. That's why Weis, McDaniels, Patricia, O'Brien, etc. all sucked when they moved on. And all the defensive assistants that moved on suck too, because they no longer had Belichick himself.

[–] bstyledevi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I have a theory...

Because there's a difference between being a good head coach and being able to TEACH someone to be a good head coach.

In the late 90s/early 2000s, when he medically retired from WWF/WWE, Shawn Michaels opened a wrestling school. One of the biggest criticisms of him as a teacher (most famously from Bryan Danielson) was that while he was undoubtedly one of the best wrestlers of his era (and possibly of all time), he had a real problem teaching others to do what came naturally to him.

It's possible that Belichick is the same way.

"Imperfect Fruit" is a nice description for dog shit.

[–] I_Shall_Be_Known@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Being an nfl coach is hard as fuck. Just look at Andy Reid who had an incredible tree just a few years ago. Most of his “fruit” has turned rotten. Nagy and shurmur are absolutely trash. Rivera and Pederson were once high flyers, now they are the epitome of mediocre. Frank Reich flamed out. McDermott is still doing well but another year or two of playoff chokes and the bills probably move on. Harbaugh is the diamond obviously, but how much of that is also attributed to being around football his whole life? Clearly being a great coach runs in the family.

Some of the pats guys have been horrible coaches, but some have also been solid. I think if bob had been in more stable front office setting and florez had another year of experience both would have had way more success. Florez clearly had very limited connections across the league and hired way too many pats guys on the offense. He needed a better staff and that was probably his downfall. I think any patriots “coordinator” should probably leave and take a true coordinator job with someone else for a year or two before they make the jump to head coach.

[–] elkabbanit@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s because the Tree himself (BB) is “imperfect”

And y’all pats fans don’t wanna come to grips with that.

[–] SportsBall89@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because of Brady

[–] Acrobatic-Cow-3871@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

These guys thrived as UNDERLINGS, I mean, I could see that most of them weren't HC material. HC is different than OC or DC!!!!

[–] ShenanigansCLESports@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because teams hire these guys expecting results in 2 years when they are trying to build a system like the Patriots/Steelers/Packers. They sign a bunch of vets because they don't want rookies playing in year 1 and want to develop the "next man up" system when they can't or won't resign players which takes a long time to have that system in place and working.

[–] visulvung@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

cause Brady was the actual OC.

[–] DetroitLionsSBChamps@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I imagine there was a lot of haggling over that "imperfect" descriptor lol. Gotta think the first pass was "rotten" but they didn't want to be so aggressive.

[–] Fr3shlif321@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because you don’t have Tom Brady.

[–] Charlietuna6969@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bill is a fraud that benefited from tom brady

[–] abuchewbacca1995@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Cause even belichick is trash without Brady or gronk

[–] BiznessCasual@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I still believe Mangini could have been something if he hadn't gone to the Browns to die.

[–] MUTUALDESTRUCTION69@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I know we make fun of college football on here but like….that Nick Saban guy is a pretty good coach. Always wonder what he would’ve done with Drew Brees.

[–] hwhatnow2112@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because he’s an overrated coach…

[–] landofknees@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Brian Flores is a dawg, keep his name out yo mouth, basically got fired from taking a team everyone knows they tried to tank and won plenty of games

[–] Neemzeh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Perhaps because, you know, BB is an overrated coach himself who got carried by the GOAT QB. I really do not understand why this is so difficult for people to grasp. BB is a defensive minded coach and he had good teams in the 2000s because he knew how to build a defense based on the NFL landscape at the time. Since 2011, he's been shit and has absolutely gotten carried by Brady.

[–] Jwroth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

“It was Brady the whole time?”

“Always was.”

👨‍🚀🔫

[–] dehydratedbagel@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Because they didn't get to continue to be carried by the greatest QB of all time.

[–] Soren_Camus1905@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bill is a football nerd who is good with his guys and had the GOAT. His branches also seem to be football nerds but they don't have the GOAT and they seemingly suck at being good locker room guys.

[–] dwnso@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No Tom Brady

[–] wrestlingchampo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

As more time passes from Brady's departure from the Patriots, it sure seems like he was a much, MUCH bigger factor in the success of the Patriots 00's and 10's run then many people thought initially (myself included)
