My father found an iPhone while out walking his dogs. it’s case and screen protector looked like it saw better days. I finally got it charged, took the screen protector off because I couldn’t take it looking that way 🤣 and it has an sos in the top right corner. It doesn’t have any lost mode information on it but I’ve seen alerts come up for medication and games.

Since my trying to figure out how to find the owner gotten me into this iPhone unavailable, is there anything else I can try to reunite the phone and owner or should I call it a day and dispose of it?

You can try waiting any time and then you need to insert your personal one where there will be Internet and that it will be suitable if the phone is locked to the operator AT&T or Verizon or another that can work with the phone

Ask Siri ‘Whose phone is this?’

[–] NPMR@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I can’t ask Siri, it just says to enter passcode to use Siri.

Can you plug it into a Mac at home or take it to an Apple Store? The serial numbers will be attached to the owner.

[–] katmndoo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Apple store won't do anything with it.

When I found a phone , I restarted it and saw the service provider. So I just bought it to them. I’m sure they figured it out from there.

[–] Sempot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah they brought it home

[–] CREMICHIGAN@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Send it to buyback they will give you a few bucks for it

[–] fumblerooskee@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not if it’s attached to an iCloud account.

[–] nikenick28@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Can you press and hold volume up and side button where they have any emergency contacts set up?

[–] NPMR@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just takes me to the slide to power off and emergency call.

[–] Loopdyloop2098@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's my phone! Give it back

[–] AgentStylo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

[–] nkonaboy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If you have an Apple Store close by, you can take it to them.

[–] Feahnor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Apple employee here: don’t do that, we are not allowed to do anything about lost phones.

Take it to the nearest police station.

[–] JonDoeJoe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Police don’t want to handle something like this and won’t care for it

[–] Super-Ear-6230@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He’s just reciting Apples policy. If you mention a lost phone they gotta say take it to the police. If someone says they lose their phone you gotta tell them to call the police.

[–] Robertbnyc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s like the game of hot potato. No no don’t take it to the police station they won’t do anything.

Take it to the nearest recycling bin

Whenever I find a stray iPhone (which I’ve found a few), I just ask Siri to call mom. Let someone know I found the phone and I’m leaving it at this or that lost and found. So far I haven’t come across one that didn’t have mom saved in their contacts

[–] hollowman2011@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Sometimes people have their Siri set up to not activate at first without a passcode. Seems to be the case with this one.

[–] LoadingStill@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Hold the lock button and when siri pops up say call mom, dad, husband, or wife. One of those will almost always work.

[–] 15pmm01@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Back in my day, the answer was always a simple "call Home"

[–] RepMajor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There’s no service on the phone / sim tho - the cellular bar is showing SOS , so it won’t call anyone

[–] KevinCox940@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That's if Siri is enabled. I keep Siri disabled. I don't care for something that's always listening. Outside of Frasier that is 😀

[–] BlakeWebb19@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Look for the imei in the sim tray and go from there

[–] NPMR@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just see a string of numbers, the provider name and that it’s a nano sim.

[–] imkriss@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Leave it on and charged do the find my phone feature works. Take it to an iPhone/ phone store if you don’t want them finding their way to your front door 💁

[–] watomalon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ugh. I lost my iPhone 12pro someone pickpocketed in Vegas and it was last seen in LA. I wish this was mine ):

[–] Thanosnuke@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Check medical id by pressing volume up and power button

[–] kpairodeez@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If it comes up SOS, they've already written it off

[–] curtisjk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not true. That’s apples emergency calling service that uses satellites when the phone has no signal. Looks like the sim has been deactivated.

[–] FarBoat503@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Its not the satellite thing. It's just within range of any cell tower. By law they have to let you make emergency calls even without a sim or plan. This shows up as SOS on iOS.

[–] KimChaeyun@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If there's no improvement in the situation and it's just been a paperweight for some time you could possibly sell it for parts, as a last resort. That's if the owner has become impossible to find.

[–] mnrabs@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Or wait for someone to call you and answer them enquiring about the owner

[–] ggonzalez105@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If there’s an Apple Store nearby just give it to them. They may be able to locate the owner. At the very least I believe they have software to get into the device.

[–] CryptoRushing@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

These are weird comments.

The only correct answer in this scenario is to see which Carrier is listed on the SIM Card, and take it to the nearest local store. They can look up the account owner’s information there.

If there is no Carrier Listed on the SIM, take it to the nearest Apple Store and they will identify who bought it or have methods to get in contact with the iCloud Account Holder.

The best solution is always Apple in this case because they are the ones able to look at settings and information you won’t be able to access.

[–] icaredoyoutho@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wonder where you live. Cause Apple here in Norway wants to sell new products not reunite a owner with their lost iPhone 15 if the owner isn't able to find it on their own through the location revealed by others customers apple product service. Even the cell provider doesn't help identify the customer.

[–] Morinth39@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can hand it to the closest police station from where it was found if you’re out of ideas. They lodge all found property & the owner may naturally check in with them.

[–] WXIII@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I guess you could try iTunes. Try connecting the phone to your computer via a cable and see if it gives you a prompt for the Apple ID this device is connected to. You could try writing an email to that ID.

[–] Abdulaziz_S@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Put your sim card in. Ask siri, "call my mom, dad, or spouse". It may call their relatives and you get hold of them.

[–] maleryani@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If find my iPhone is enabled, you can just leave it unlocked near another iPhone and it will be able to be tracked. https://www.macrumors.com/guide/find-my/ "When your lost device is offline but close to another device, it's able to connect to that other device over Bluetooth and relay its location. That means that your devices are more trackable than ever, and there's a better chance you can find a device that's been lost."

[–] ZonaPunk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

just leave it being charged.... hopefully the owner will put in lost mode and you will get message showing how to contact the owner.

[–] GeorgiaKeeffe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Once I found an iPad in an airport, picked it up and called Apple to let them know I'd found it, gave them the serial number and said I'd like to return it. They said they couldn't provide the iCloud contact, I asked them to send an email to the owner letting them know I'd like to return it, they said that wouldn't be possible either. I would have liked to have solved it because from the case and the wallpaper it looked like it belonged to a child.

[–] NPMR@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same here, by the wallpaper I think it’s a child or teen on the Lock Screen. If it was my stuff lost I’d like to hope (know it wouldn’t but still) a Good Samaritan would try to reunite it and me. Again I know it wouldn’t happen but eternal optimist 🤣

[–] yexoid@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Take it to the nearest Apple Store please. Thank you!

[–] tubarchy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ask siri “who’s phone is this?”

[–] ElmoloKloIokakolo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I tried this with my iPhone, and it only said this phone belongs to “first name”

That’s easy find some another iPhone someone that you know and then you can show that you found that phone. It will find out who it is and notify them by their email or their phone number or their emergency contacts. I’m sure they know where their phone is by now because you do all of this inside of the app called Finder
