Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

Are there good and efficient ways of communicating how a free Palestine from the river to the sea and the destruction of the zionist entity in its current form means equal rights for Jews and Muslims, not the eradication or expulsion of all Jews living in Palestine?

Racism makes the typical westerner assume that given the chance Palestinian Arabs will do to zionist Jews what they did to them. Decades of zionist propaganda has made the claim that opposing the existence of the zionist entity is the same as opposing the existence of Jews. Getting the message across that principled support for Palestinian liberation is not some sort of reverse Zionism can be really hard.

It's 6:10 AM in Gaza. CNN's headline implies to me the ground war could start in earnest today.

A ground offensive in southern Gaza could be imminent. Here's what you should know

With Israeli leaders declaring control of the northern part of Gaza, including Gaza City, there are growing indications that a ground offensive into the southern part of the strip could be imminent. Aid organizations said any Israeli move into the south of the enclave could make an already bad humanitarian situation considerably worse.

Here are other headlines you should know:

Edit

Fuck. Things in the south could get bad too.

Israel-Hamas war: Internet, phone networks collapse in Gaza | AP News

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Internet and telephone services collapsed across the Gaza Strip on Thursday for lack of fuel, the main Palestinian provider said, bringing a potentially long-term blackout of communications as Israel signaled its offensive against Hamas could next target the south, where most of the population has taken refuge.

On the CNN Gaza war updates page - there's a video with this caption...

https://streamable.com/7v87jy

CNN visits exposed tunnel shaft IDF believes is part of larger network under hospital 03:06

I didn't think it was possible - but it's even more bullshit than I thought.

"Visits" in the caption title is the equivalent of a load bearing wall still standing at the hospital. The IDF takes the reporter (CNN's lead Pentagon correspondent) to the scene under the "cover of darkness" for safety and he's taken in Israeli military vehicles. There's night vision footage etc. That eats up the first half of the vid. Then they get to the hole and the reporter says - "we were not allowed to enter the shaft". And "the Israeli military sent special gear down to see what it leads".

There's ~10 seconds of IDF "handout" video footage that's sped up that ends at a steel door that the IDF "has not opened because they fear it's booby-trapped". The footage must be many days old already. There was no reason for the reporter to go all the way into Gaza. We are now at ~2:00. The last minute is IDF boilerplate spin. And the vid is over.

Here's an article if you need something to share with libs who are being tedious about such stuff as "Israel told them to evacuate south..." Not only is the article excellent it's from a fave lib source - NPR.

Israel told Palestinians in Gaza to move south but attacks continue there : NPR

So far, a total of 11,470 people — of which more than two-thirds are children, women and elderly — have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its military offensive last month, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. [...] The dangers for those fleeing south are evident from the high number of people killed there. [...] A map by the United Nations' humanitarian affairs office, relying on the health ministry's data, shows that more than 3,600 people — roughly one-third of the total — were killed in areas where Israel has told civilians in northern Gaza to escape to.

[...]

"Israel's use of the term 'evacuation' for sending Palestinians to southern areas is really problematic, because it conjures up an idea of a safe route to a place of safety," says Caitlin Procter, a research fellow at the Center on Conflict Development and Peacebuilding at the Geneva Graduate Institute. "But the reality is there is no safe place left in Gaza for people to go."

The Finnish government is working on a plan to close the eastern border 🇫🇮 🔥 🇫🇮 🔥 🇫🇮 🔥 🇫🇮 🔥 🇫🇮 🔥

Not like it isn't already closed for tourist visas, air travel, and train travel.

spoilerThe [Finnish] government will have to tighten the already prepared border proposal, as the situation has rapidly escalated at the border

Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (ps.) was to announce today the restrictions on border crossings at the eastern border at 17.30. At around 17.50, however, it was announced that the briefing had been cancelled for today. The reason for the cancellation is that the decision could not be finalised today.

According to Yle, the restrictions planned by the government in recent days were not sufficient. The number of asylum seekers is growing faster than the government expected, which is why it is preparing tougher restrictions for tomorrow. The decisions will be taken tomorrow at a general session of the Council of State at 13:00, followed by a press conference.

Yle sources do not comment on whether the decision to be prepared will allow for the closure of border posts on the eastern border. Decisions will be made on the basis of how difficult the situation becomes and what is legally possible.

The Prime Minister's Office told STT earlier in the day that the Council of State would hold an extraordinary general session today. The matter was first reported by Ilta-Sanomat.

Last weekend, the Border Guard reported an increase in the number of asylum seekers. By 18:00 on Wednesday, 74 asylum seekers had arrived at border crossing points in south-east Finland. On Monday, a total of 39 arrived and on Tuesday 55. This is what it's all about:

Russia has started to allow people with incomplete travel documents to cross the Finnish border. For example, they lack a visa or a passport.

The Border Guard reported an increase in the number of asylum seekers over the weekend. According to the Finnish Border Guard, more asylum seekers than usual have arrived at border crossing points in South-East Finland in recent months.

The number of arrivals has been increasing daily. Dozens of asylum seekers have arrived daily at border crossing points in South-East Finland this week. The number of asylum seekers is estimated to reach hundreds.

The arrivals are third-country nationals. Among the arrivals so far are nationals of Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Turkey and Somalia. They arrive in Finland mainly during the evening, night and early morning hours.

People have arrived at the border mainly in small groups, some on bicycles. Bicycle entry was banned from last Thursday.

Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (ps.) told Yle on Tuesday evening that Finland could close its eastern border and even the whole country's border in certain circumstances. According to Rantanen, this is a case of illegal entry.

Asylum applications cannot be completely prevented. The right to apply for asylum is a human right that is enshrined in international treaties.

The situation on the eastern border has also activated smugglers. Arabic-language messages offer transport from Russia to Finland for $2,000.

The increase in the number of asylum seekers is also reflected in the reception centre in Lappeenranta.

Russia carried out a similar operation on the Finnish border during the 2015 refugee crisis. At the turn of 2015-2016, almost two thousand asylum seekers from Russia entered Finland via the Salla and Inari Raja-Joosep border posts.

The OpenAI drama is a classic case of the VC supplanting the technical expertise because profit

Sam Altman went from "initial investor and board member" to "founder" to "literally the backbone of OpenAI"...

Why? Because he was able to get funding.

Supposedly Isntreal has cancelled planned sales of Merkavas to Morocco and Cyprus

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has sharply changed its foreign policy line on the issue of arms sales, canceling an earlier decision to supply Merkava III tanks to Cyprus and Morocco. This change of plans is a departure from a pre-agreed arrangement under which Israel would transfer dozens of its tanks from reserves in response to Cyprus' transfer to Ukraine of 40 T-80 tanks previously purchased from Russia.

This scheme was seen as an indirect way for Israel to support Ukraine through third countries, since Israel traditionally refrains from directly supplying weapons to conflict zones. However, as Israeli media now report, the decision was revised based on an assessment of the needs of its own armed forces.

In the latter case, the key reason is the loss of a large number of Merkava tanks on the battlefield. Taking into account the data of the Hezbollah and Hamas groups, Israel has already lost 74 tanks of this type, which is about 20% of the total number of combat vehicles of this type in service with the Israeli army.

The famous figure of Borotba, Vlad Voitsekhovsky, suddenly passed away

(Borotba is a revolutionary Marxist organization in Ukraine, and one of the first to protest against the Euromaidan fascists in 2013)

On Sunday, November 12, one of the leaders of Borotba and the founders of the Ukrainian Red Army (UKA), Vlad Voitsekhovsky, suddenly died. He survived in the Odessa House of Trade Unions on May 2, 2014, went through emigration, captivity and fought against neo-Nazis with weapons in their hands in the Donbass.

We have repeatedly written about how he miraculously survived the mass beatings in the Odessa House of Trade Unions, about the repressions that fell upon him from the SBU, demanded his release and held pickets at the Ukrainian Consulate in Almaty.

Then we wrote: “None of the perpetrators of this mass murder were punished or arrested, and vice versa, those who tried to save the lives of their comrades, such as comrade and Borotba activist Vlad Voitsekhovsky, ended up in the dungeons of the SBU. Nazi formations and militants became part of the state apparatus, and it was with the massacre in Odessa that massacres began in Mariupol, Donetsk, Lugansk and other cities of Donbass and Eastern Ukraine.”

Our comrades were glad when, as a result of an international protest campaign, he was released and exchanged. Subsequently, Vlad Voitsekhovsky fought defending the people of Donbass. During the fighting, he received several shell shocks, which only worsened his health, which was already undermined as a result of brutal beatings and torture during the Odessa events, as well as during the period of imprisonment. Most likely, this was the reason for his sudden death on November 12.

Responsibility for his premature death, like many other activists who gave their lives in the struggle, lies entirely with the current Kiev regime, which established the Pinochet regime, banned communist ideology and all left-wing organizations and parties in Ukraine. Vlad Voitsekhovsky is another victim of this far-right terror!

We mourn this fiery comrade and express our sincere condolences to his comrades in Borotba, family and friends! He will forever remain in our memory, being a symbol of unbending will, principled struggle and will be an example for new generations of communists! Sleep well dear comrade!

I don't understand why the US can't arrange regime change for Israel. It doesn't even have to support Israel's campaign against Gaza for Israel to remain as a client state and cypher for action in the Middle East. People like Ehud Olmert seem more than willing to maintain the previous status quo.

around 2 months ago, TMR had Matt Duss (Bernie's ex-foreign policy advisor) on the show where he told them we have to keep funding Ukraine forever, we have to support them in their fight against occupation, Putin is evil, etc. I remember making a post about it at the time, but it was on my last account and I nuked the comments a while back.

anyway, fast forward to today and TMR's playing a clip of Duss saying allllllll the State Department lines about Israel. they have a right to defend themselves, Hamas are terrorists using human shields, all that. they're taking great pride in dunking on him, not mentioning the fact they had him on months ago and gobbled up everything he said about Ukraine. no introspection, nothing. clowns.

Via Middle East Spectator Telegram:

— 🇮🇷 Iran's Fatah-1 Hypersonic Ballistic Missile (left) and Fatah-2 Hypersonic Cruise Missile (right)

Iran is now one of only three countries in the world to have successfully developed such missile technology.

The missiles have a maximum speed of Mach 25 in the final stage, and are capable of exo-atmospheric and inter-atmospheric maneuvering to avoid terminal ABM systems, such as THAAD. Their max ranges are approximately 1400 to 2000 KM.

The only two other countries that currently have hypersonic missiles in service are Russia and China.

Lion sleeps it off after Saturday stroll through Italian town

A lion that escaped from an Italian circus has been taking well-deserved naps to recover from a Saturday night out in the seaside town of Ladispoli that sparked panic before authorities managed to recapture him.

The adult lion, named "Kimba", escaped from the "Rony Roller" circus on Saturday afternoon and was on the loose for around seven hours before he was sedated with an aesthetic dart.

"What happened is very strange...All we can say is that a lion does not have the ability to open a latch and break a lock," Rony Vassallo, the animal supervisor and trainer at the circus told Reuters.

In a Facebook post on Monday, local mayor Alessandro Grando wrote that he would ask council experts to check if there were legal grounds to revoke the permits for the "Rony Roller" circus. The travelling circus was scheduled to stay in Ladipsoli between Nov. 9-19.

Some locals expressed solidarity with Kimba. "I am sorry, because it is in prison. It should be in its environment, the savannah," said Ladispoli resident Giuseppe Altavilla.

I get the feeling somebody intentionally liberated the poor guy. Hope the circus gets shut down.
