Hasn't been mentioned yet so I'll add--

LibreOffice is a great open-source, free alternative to Microsoft Office Suite as well as the Apple apps like Pages and Numbers. I personally have come to prefer it to both of those, regardless of cost.

I would recommend Linux Mint

Some of the ones I literally can’t use my Mac without:

  • Alfred: Spotlight on steroids, clipboard history, automations, web shortcuts. This is my first install on any Mac.

  • OwlOCR: Copy text from literally ANYWHERE on your screen (text in a video on YouTube? You can do it).

  • Orion Browser: If you love chrome extensions, but still love the look and feel of Safari, this is the way.

  • MOS: If you use a non-Apple mouse with your Mac, get this.

Pasta is a great clipboard manager.

Caffeine is a great little tool that prevents your laptop from going to sleep when needed.

Give this video a watch, I agree with many of the settings Quinn changes.

Enjoy your new computer!

Amphetamine is a free app in the App Store that does that same thing as caffeinate

[–] celeronu@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Something like Caffeine is supported by mac os by default. Just type: "caffeinate -d" in the terminal

My suggestion list:

  • MS Office
  • Spotify
  • Google Chrome
  • VLC video player
  • Quake 2 All other needs might be covered by default Apple apps.

Rectangle, Alfred, Monitor Control (if you’re using external monitors), VMware Fusion, AppCleaner.

As others have pointed out, it does depend on what you want to do with your mac. That will drive what apps to put on it. For me personally, I develop software so of course the latest version of xCode, BBEdit (kinda like programmers notepad), OneNote for taking notes and Monosnap for screenshots. Enjoy the new rig!

Dear God, finally. 30 comments down, how can this be so? Alfred is literally the best productivity app for the Mac, ever. Period.

[–] dvenom88@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There are no “must have” apps. Everybody’s worklow and habits are different.

[–] Qwienke13@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Xcode. Other than that online there’s an app called MacGPT. It adds chat gpt right Into the task bar making it super easy to access with a quick hot key press.

[–] BorysRomanov@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

PopClip, one of the most useful applications available on macOS

[–] moneymakerbs@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

iStat always. It lets you know when your machine’s acting up. Maybe Alfred. Otherwise since all I do is surf the web, email, and calendar I mostly use the stock Apple apps for compatibility.

Vivid or Lunar, both have a £20 lifetime license fee but also a free trial to see if you like it. I personally recommend Lunar. They both allow you to push the screen brightness upto 1000 nits and below 100 nits for whatever working environment you’re in. Best thing is it doesn’t damage the screen as Apple themselves state the XDR display is capable of sustained full screen 1000 nits indefinitely.

"SelfControl" and "Flux" are really good for productivity, SelfControl helps to block the unnecessary websites, and there's literally no way, absolutely no way to access those websites, unless of course you turn on a VPN, Flux on the other hand uses circadian rhythm and the location of the device to determine the colour temp of the screen, really beneficial for sleep cycle

Rectangle and AltTab

[–] shamair28@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Scroll Reverser. Not as often now, but back when my MBP was my “everything” computer, I’d use a mouse and separate keyboard regularly.

But if you ever use a mouse regularly, you’ll notice that the scrolling follows the natural scroll direction of the trackpad. Scroll Reverse lets you invert it just for mice.

Also Macs Fan Control. Not really an issue on the new M-chips, but for anyone with an Intel Mac reading this, this is a godsend. Set your own fan curve, and monitor CPU temps from the nav bar.

I use this one!

[–] extreme145@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Adblock for safari from the app store and avg anti-virus the free one

[–] Odd-Lobster-9756@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Rectangle is a must, it’s like sort of windows management but on Mac, I couldn’t live without it

[–] S_Moses_E@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

100% Magnet App for Window Management

[–] Tonamyy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

For me :

  • Rectangle fort shitty windowing in macos
  • Brew as package manager that will make your life simplier if you have habit to work with the terminal
  • Any cleaner like cleanmymac because of all “system data” junk left over by macos

They are essential for me
