Apparently in some parts of the world it's already Monday June 12th. I see registrations going up.

This results in the server CPU staying around 70% even spiking over 90%. So I will upgrade the VPS from 4cpu/16GB to 8cpu/32GB.

Expect a few minutes downtime at 17:00 CET

It's still slow af. takes me 45 seconds to save edit to this post What's the plan to fund scaling? You should probably have some burstable resources set up with a hyperscaler cloud.

Some world event will happen and this site will break down faster than toilet paper in the rain

this ~~site~~ instance

Ftfy ;)

You got a point though, just made an account myself and I'm not used to looking at a spinning icon for 5 seconds just to post a comment. I dont even think my last two comments even posted lol.. could be the app I'm using. Let's hope this one posts and doesn't timeout??

What is the plan when the new VPS gets overloaded in a few hours? What happens if this instance becomes popular and has 50k users a day?

[โ€“] ruud@lemmy.world 28 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Then I move it to a dedicated server, like I did with mastodon.world which has 164k users and had over 100k active users at it's peak.

How is the funding? Do you need help? Will this be a long term project?

[โ€“] ruud@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Funding is still OK but we might need to upgrade the server again soon. Links for funding are on the homepage sidebar. I don't quit this server as long as it's used. If I ever get tired of it I hand it over.

I was thinking of starting my own server first and host it on hetzner or digitalocean because I have good experience with those and they're easy to scale. Anyway I'm here now and it's better to see this one grow :) If I can help in any way let me know.

[โ€“] jennwiththesea@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Oh, you know what you're doing, then! Awesome.

[โ€“] Photographer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Awesome :) glad to see this instance has some staying power!

Your professionalism and experience is part of why I decided to make this my "home" instance. Thanks for all the work keeping this up and stable over the last few days!

[โ€“] MarPan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Man, I just ended up here by pure chance, I guess I'm lucky :)

[โ€“] Alpagu@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you pay for the server, how much do you pay monthly?

[โ€“] Omgarm@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

Also: how can people help support?

[โ€“] TeaHands@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The exodus has definitely begun. For anyone who hasn't seen it you can literally watch Reddit go dark one sub at a time at https://reddark.untone.uk

[โ€“] bitrate@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

This is awesome and hiarious

[โ€“] art101@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Been watching this thinking "WOW the Reddit-ocalypse is happening!!!" Then the site went down. 698 sites had went dark when I last checked.

[โ€“] TeaHands@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

He's struggling to get the site to stay up under the demand but is streaming his local version here https://www.twitch.tv/reddark_247

[โ€“] Violet@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Neat link, thanks!

[โ€“] Mutisi0n@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Thank you for all you do

[โ€“] s4if@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Am I tripping or is everything a bit snappier now? ^^

Edit: on the other hand, commenting does still take quite a bit ๐Ÿซ

[โ€“] ruud@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah I can't yet find the cause of that, it's annoying the *** out of me

[โ€“] beefbaby182@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Oh good. I thought it was just me and I was taking crazy pills.

[โ€“] ulu_mulu@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yeah it's June 12th already in New Zealand and probably a few other countries, I've seen a few saying they were shutting down their subreddits because of that.

For anyone interested to see subs while they shutdown: https://reddark.untone.uk/

p.s. Thank you for your work! :)

[โ€“] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Thanks! Enjoying my stay so far for what it's worth.

[โ€“] B4tid0@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Thanks for the headups! I have being using this intance for a couple of hours. Is great! Hope things go well and the bot issues is not too bad.

[โ€“] chrundle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Since registrations will probably keep going up for a while, can users donate to keep the server running?

[โ€“] ruud@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Yes they sure can! See the sidebar of the homepage for donation platforms we use. Thanks!

[โ€“] aranym@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Thanks for maintaining this - I'm a Reddit refugee and this instance has been great so far!

Technical issues are very understandable when you're growing this fast :)

[โ€“] GeneralStrike@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Thank you for this! Brand new to Lemmy but really excited to see it grow.

[โ€“] jayrod@lemmy.film 3 points 2 years ago

Congrats on all the registrations! Glad to see this catching on. :)

[โ€“] Camar16@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Is there a web site that we can see the status of the servers/instances, number of users, stuff like that. It'll be an interesting couple of days with all the new communities going up. Good luck

[โ€“] Fog@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Wow, already implementing improvements! Looking forward to a long term future here!

[โ€“] Luxsidus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Thanks for the solid maintenance Ruud!

[โ€“] BCas@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Thanks for your work :)

I did my very first account login right as this happened and was very confused haha. But now working smoothly and excited to figure this all out!

[โ€“] oryx@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Thank you for the great work!

[โ€“] MrPoopyButthole@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is this perhaps why making new communities stopped working the last 30mins?

[โ€“] ruud@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

No that should just work. Please DM me a screenshot of what you're trying to create.
