Like the title says, coming from android (more specifically pixel)

I did enjoy the inital promise of customization offered on android devices, but for whatever reason Google has done away with huge portions of that freedom and weirdly “pure android” has started to feel more like IOS.

Much to my pleasant surprise apple has fixed a huge number of my complaints with iOS since my last iPhone 7 years ago. To be frank I used to shit on iPhone but am eating a lot of crow here admitting that they definitely fixed most of their shortcomings and are clearly pulling away in the smartphone race (like you needed me to tell you that)

That being said… HOW HOW HOW is the iPhone keyboard so bad? I know this sounds like a small problem but when I last used an iPhone years ago, the period placement (near the space bar) caused me to constantly fat finger random periods into most of my searches and messages. It’s hideous design and I can’t understand for the life of me how apple hasn’t solved this wart of a problem. Especially because I KNOW that most people who work at apple are aware of the issue because it affects basically anyone with an iPhone! LOL

Not only is it an old, know issue, but it’s an obvious one that actually causes inconvenience. Not just the period, the entire board is cramped and it’s genuinely difficult to type on compared to Gboard, which I am using now to type this. It took me a few days to realize I could use gboard on IOS and HOLY SHIT is the difference night and day. I actually feel bad for all the people (most) using the stock iOS keyboard. It was like being stuck in hell lol

Just bewildered by how apple has solved so much yet somehow ignored this simple fix for going on a decade

The keyboard is awful, and how can we not increase the size of the keys? Anyway, I use swiftkeys now which is a lot better and it actually has a number row, but I still can't change the size of the keys.

[–] Intelligent_Hour_906@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can download Gboard for iPhone since you were used to it on your pixel if im not wrong (i did too when i switched to ios the iphone keyboard was hella hard)

[–] jamwin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I hate having the period/fullstop on the right hand side, as I always hit it when I hit the space bar

[–] rabouilethefirst@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It seems like Apple just doesn’t listen about this. It’s my only issue with the keyboard

[–] yourdemiurge@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Try going to settings-general-keyboard and untick the “.” shortcut

[–] restarting_today@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can just double tap space.

Just download Gboard

[–] seitgeizt@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Same but my experience with gboard on ios was absolute dogshite idk why but SwiftKey did me better

[–] fatfuckery@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Swiftkey is a huge improvement over iOS keyboard, but still massively worse than SwiftKey on Android.

[–] boq@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Swiftkey on iOS is better than the stock keyboard but still bad compared to Android keyboards. No idea why iOS is so behind in that regard.

[–] hyperlobster@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

tl;dr: OP prefers a different keyboard, generalises this out to everyone as if that’s a valid thing to do.

[–] anamazingredditor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Im one those who ignores these keyboard rants lol. I maily speak a non supported language so I just use the keyboard bare, as in no special features

[–] TheProModder@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Swiftkey is way better and also has a number row.

[–] Demigans@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Thats it? Thats the only complaint? I was going to make a new post about how horrifyingly bad the Iphone keyboard is and thought for a moment I didn’t need too. The entire system of typing is made as if its by students on a deadline and technically they have all the functionality but practically its just terrible.

[–] BadDub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same here and I’ve been using since the 3gs. I always hit the period key instead of space. Wish I could move the period key to the left or space to far right

[–] zerbey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

GBoard exists on iPhone too, but I can tell you it doesn't work as seamlessly as on Pixel. The keyboard is the one weak point on the iPhone that I miss from Android.

Funnily enough, it used to be the other way around.

[–] noscopefku@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i think its also ridiculous that you can't show the nunbers row above the letters, its possible with android screen real estate, yet apple cant even put it on the regular ipads with 10.9" screen... you need an ipad pro for that (which has 11" screen)

[–] SkepTones@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (5 children)

I’d say I’m used to it, but man I do remember Android having a wayyy better keyboard experience overall. They just recently brought back key vibrations on iPhone, which it feels horrible to not have. Would love if they had an option for the strength of the keyboard vibes. The layout is very whatever to me I can work with it.

The period next to the space bar only appears in Safari, I don’t see how that’s such a big deal to you. It is annoying as hell, but just how often are you typing things in Safari? There’s no period next to space in iMessage or Reddit or any other non-browser app that I can think of. Weird how you titled your post “its keyboard is shockingly bad” and then you go on to mention one tiny thing that doesn’t make the keyboard as a whole bad.

[–] bearxor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It also only appears whenever you type in safari in the address bar. If you’re typing in a text box like this in safari the period doesn’t show up.

[–] -K9V@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah exactly. I do agree that it’s extremely annoying when typing in the address bar, but that’s about it. Not a huge deal to me.

it's all about what you are used to. no design is good enough to overcome years and years of muscle memory. likewise i struggle a bit with typing when it comes to samsung keyboard and gboard whenever i have to use an android phone.

[–] xpnerd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Man, I have the same problem with regular keyboards -- I'm so used to my personal keyboard, that I'll be constantly making mistakes if I'm forced to use a different one. So yes, I can totally see how this would translate into the mobile platform.

I use Google keyboard in iPhone and honestly it's leaguesbetter

[–] InappropriateCanuck@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Agreed. As an ex-Android user of 15 years, iPhone's keyboard is actually fucking horrible. I switched it on my first day with Microsoft SwiftKey.

[–] WorldlyDay7590@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] CouchHam@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s only like that in search bars. All my Google searches are.like.this. But they still work.

[–] melvintwj@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I fucking miss nintype

[–] mines_4_diamonds@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

As someone who switched to Iphone a few months ago after exclusively using Android, all I can say is you'll get used to it and the constant switching to the numpad as well. I don't know how you type but since I don't use english words only I turned off autocorrect as well since it messes with words it doesn't know.

You'll also probably miss ,if you ever used it, where you can use two apps at once on Android since switching apps on Iphone can be a bit of pain sometimes if you use more than three at once.

P.S. if you get used to the keyboard and tried using an android again you'll have a hard time typing on that ooof.

[–] Permexpat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The keyboard on the mini is horrible, I’m constantly mistyping words or hitting the suggested words at the top randomly. So frustrating

[–] Chinbie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Well thats true, i am both using s21 ultra and iPhone 15 pro.max, and i gonna say, the keyboard in iPhone isn't great that i have downloaded gboard and used it on my iPhone

[–] FirstAd6165@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think I must be the only person who actually enjoys the iPhone keyboard. I have been using it for so long that it feels really natural to me. I barely ever have any typos and it actually corrects what I type wrong. It is very responsive and smooth in my experience

[–] badjettasex@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just switched as well and completely agree. Apple wtf.

[–] CallOfSpagooty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I find it to be much better. Spell check actually works and doesn’t inject random gibberish too.

[–] djfxonitg@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

As someone who’s had iPhone since iPhone 3G, the keyboard has gotten so much better and worse at the same time. One great workaround for me has been to add your common fat-finger errors to the keyboard shortcuts to compensate. For example, I “lol” a lot, but would fat finger “lop” alot. So you just add a shortcut so the phrase “lop” automatically gets changed to “lol”.

Yes it’s kinda annoying I get it, but English is annoying too lol. Now try having the English and Spanish keyboards on at the same time, it can be a nightmare lol 😅

[–] fabrictm@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That’s why Gboard does not work for me for example, because I use English and Romanian, and aside for a few special characters, it’s the same character set. But I have to rely solely on G board knowing or predicting what word I’m typing or what language I’m typing. The Apple keyboard, the way, it is still works better for me because I can force it to a specific language.

[–] eneka@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

i need to figure out my my autocorrect keeps chaging "bus" into "bud". So god damn annoying.

I agree and all the improvements in iOS 17 only made it worse.

I had to correct that sentence twice 👏👏👏

[–] wareagle995@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Download Gboard. Helps a little

[–] posting_drunk_naked@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Third party keyboards are ok, I use Gboard and it's not as cool as it is on Android but still fine for daily use. Like any other shortcomings on iOS, it'll get fixed when Apple decides they want to fix it.

The advantage of Apple is that everything is designed under one roof and this usually results in stability and reliability across all their devices. Little details like being able to unlock my MacBook using my Apple Watch work absolutely no additional setup are pretty cool.

The disadvantage of Apple is that everything is designed under one roof and this sometimes results in infuriating decisions that you can't do much about. Searching is a mess. The App Library is basically unusable for me because it organizes based on use so things are always in a different spot when i look for them.

Jailbreaking has become MUCH harder since you were last in the Apple universe too. Most of the features we used to jailbreak for are built in now.....but not all.

[–] orb_outrider@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use SwiftKey. It has bugs still (like the ios keyboard popping up instead of SwiftKey) but other than that, it's a great replacement to the default keyboard.

[–] fabrictm@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I agree the keyboard is crappy, and if you use slide typing it’s absolute crap. The period placement is a huge pet peeve. I think it affects right handed people more than left handed - just anecdotally, but I could be wrong.

Gboard…I tried it many times over the years and more recently with my iPhone 15. My experience is that it’s worse than the Apple keyboard. I use slide typing heavily, and daily use two languages. Gboard…is cumbersome in my case because it relies solely on guessing the words you’re typing, and because multiple languages are all a hodgepodge in one single keyboard pot (aka with Gboard you don’t explicitly switch languages) the autocorrect gets in the way a lot. Also when long pressing a key to choose a special character like ă, the delay is way too long. So I went back to the devil I know.

[–] Mr_Robotox@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Also got an iphone like 3 days ago and I am also coming from a pixel 6 yes the keyboard on the iphone is a weak aspect specially is you are bilingual I noticed it struggles more

[–] Ratzzz28@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I miss the number row on Apple keyboard.

[–] Sharkey311@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My keyboard doesn’t have a period at all on the main keyboard screen. I have to double press the space bar to get a full stop.

[–] BaldEagleNor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s funnet, the keyboard is absolutely perfect for me but I dont type on a regular english keyboard, so the extra letters sort of ‘fixes’ the layout.

[–] Thumper-Comet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Your fat fingers and lack of dexterity aren't Apple's fault. I've been using iPhones since the very first and I can't say I've ever had any trouble with the keyboard.

Can you share which apps you are using that has this period next to the spacebar on the keyboard? Because the only time I can get it to appear is when typing URLs, and the Gboard also has the period next to the spacebar there

[–] insoul8@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yea, i wish there were a better keyboard but whenever I try another one like Swiftkey, the keyboard itself is marginally better but the mouse cursor function when you hold the spacebar is terrible compared to the default Apple keyboard. You can move it around anywhere on the screen like a mouse with the default keyboard compared to the others that seem to track the lines of text which just doesn't feel intuitive at all. I personally don't see a big enough difference in the keyboards themselves to compromise on the mouse function which i tend to use a lot.

i.type.on.my.keyboard.just.fine
