I'm starting to think that charlie brown was the one source responsible for all his own problems, at least in the early days of the comic.
I'm also not sure what Charlie means by saying "I'll probably never have any use for it again", unless it's like, sexism or something.
He's lamenting that Lucy is apparently much better at using it than he is, and assumes that he won't get picked to play now that she's demonstrated her fielding skills. Note how his expression changes going into the bottom row of panels from angry to quiet surprise.
