Not just quieter, on my XR it also changes with the volume button, even though prior to iOS 17, volume keys were for media and notifications were synced with Ringtone sound level.

Notifications will work at full volume when Media Volume is full and will be muted when media volume is muted. It's the same even for lock and unlock sounds.

Only the ringtone is free from volume key control.

It’s so annoying. I wish you could change the default notification to anything.

The real problem is when you have a mag safe charger and you connect the iPhone, it plays a really loud sound that you cannot change.

[–] Dark_Lightner@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What’s a notification sound ? I’m always on silent and my watch too But what I noticed is that the iPhone vibration is much more powerful :o

It goes brrrrrrr very hard on the table 😱

[–] LordCinnabon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah I don’t like the new sounds in general. They sound dated and too quiet.

[–] ExplanationSure8996@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I miss notifications all the time because of it.

[–] denyjunctionfunction@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

How did apple innovation produce a sound quieter than silence?

[–] firestar268@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)
[–] sundryTHIS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The associated haptic vibration is also weaker, and harder to feel.

every time anyone posts anything to do with sounds the Mute Mode Supremacy crowd always come out in force to smugly post about their silence. Good for you guys, make your choices, but idk maybe read the articles you’re commenting on.

Y’all feel vibrations? Lol.

I have no problem hearing the new sound. I think it’s a much bigger deal that you can no longer choose ringtones for alert sounds or alert sounds for ringtones.

Who keeps their ringer on?

[–] Fe1onious_Monk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It should sound the same on my phone. Mine hasn’t made a notification sound since I got it, as the mute button is permanently set.

[–] macman156@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Before they removed them, I was already surprised at how quiet they are. So easy to not hear

[–] SillySoundXD@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I'm just pissed that since updating to 17 the Ringtones alerts etc. all start at the Volume you decided (lets say 100%) and after 2-3 seconds it goes down to like 20-30%.

[–] axiomaxima@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have to assume 9to5mac pays its writers by the word.

[–] elmatador12@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They changed the vibration too. That weird vibration that felt like a broken toy spring.

But at least you can change that. It was just annoying.

[–] Koleckai@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Hate the new notification sound. I wish we had more control over it.

[–] thrgd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Make it a Bit quieter and the world can breath again. I love this move! Removing mass annoyance <3

[–] 2ecStatic@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why don’t companies just make these things optional, I don’t understand forcing random changes on the user base.

[–] Kitsuneyyyy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The new Find My sound is way too low, too.

That's the one thing Apple still struggles with in iOS, is customization of the small things like notification sounds, they'll make random changes on their end, but nothing that the users can accept or even revert back on.

The vibration is quieter, too. You can't hear if your phone is being called when on Do Not Disturb unless you have an Apple Watch.

[–] Xyncz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have no problem with it cuz i always keep it on silent mode 😂

[–] ZeroOptionLightning@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Who want's to lay bets they're trying to funnel some more people in to Apple Watch?

[–] theoreticaljerk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

These sites will literally find the silliest shit to complain about.

[–] ErisUppercut@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (7 children)

Get an Apple Watch.

Obviously a bit tongue in cheek as not everyone can afford it, but my phone hasn't made a sound for 7 years and I love it so much.

Also, my colleagues phone blares out We are the Champions EVERU FUCKING TIME it rings and it fucks me off no end, so I think alerts can be selfish AF (whilst I appreciate that people are more concerned re dings than ring tones here)

[–] Kraigius@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

my phone hasn't made a sound for 7 years and I love it so much.

Well, I have a bad news for you, they broke the notification on the Apple Watch with iOS17.

You used to get notifications / wake up alarm only on your watch if it was unlocked.

Now even if my watch is unlocked and on my wrist and my phone is locked, my phone will get the notification and 5 seconds later my watch will get the same. It's annoying af.

They also did something to the notification/vibration with the latest watchOS version because both my medication reminder and my wake up alarm on my watch no longer wake me up, the vibration is much more attenuated than before. Maybe it's a ultra 2 defect?

Why do only certain apps have customs notification sounds? I would have thought most apps would want a custom sound to stand out from each other, but it seems like only the more popular apps like Snapchat have them. Is it a feature only offered to bigger developers or something?

In 2023, it seems odd that we can personalize widgets, wallpapers, and lockscreens, yet changing the default notification sound remains not possible. It's even more puzzling that you can customize notification sounds for default apps like reminders and messages. I mean I don’t wanna come off as an Android kid here, but Apple, really?

My iPhone 11 has been on silent since I got it out of the box

[–] Azraeana@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It bothers me more that the sound is now a disconnect or hang up sound. It annoys the crap out of me.

Why does it sound like the discord one

[–] s3639@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like it’s been quiet for a while. When I got my 13 Pro Max two years ago it’s the first thing I noticed compared to my 6s Plus.

[–] PolyChromaticWolf@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’d just be happy if they could fix it so my apps couldn’t turn up my volume by themselves.

[–] greenbroad-gc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I hate it. I miss important notifications because it weirdly turns off notifications for an app if I’m not tapping on it. One example is LinkedIn, I click maybe out of ten recruiter messages and Apple thinks I’m not interested. So they completely muted the notification for me. I now have to check the app regularly because of this.

[–] brighty4real@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I get notifications on my Garmin smartwatch so I’ve never had to hear notification sounds, my phones always on silent. How much quieter to be exact?

[–] airysunshine@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I prefer it tbh

[–] JPIPS42@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

For how good the hardware is they sure suck at software.

[–] squareswordfish@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I don’t get it. Why is no one addressing the fact that this article is 2 months old? Wasn’t the quieter sound fixed in 17.1?

Is it me or did the haptic feedback change too?

[–] DigGumPig@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (8 children)

I suspect my opinion is gonna be unpopular amongst you's but i actually love the new sounds and ringtones in iOS 17.

It essentially render both my medication reminder and my security camera notifications inaudible. It's just a bad decision.

[–] cbalzer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That tracks. My notifications are almost always delivered with no sound or vibration. Infuriating.

[–] wickedplayer494@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I had to go look to see what it sounded like, and I'll tell you, Rebound sounds an awful lot like the USB insertion fail sound from that one Samsung Windows theme from the XP days (that got passed around as supposedly being from the Longhorn betas), just without the echo.

[–] LionTigerWings@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been on iOS for 7 months or so. Is there any damn way to have notifications/alerts/rings on vibrate but have media and all other sounds on normal. Flicking the switch off make a lot of things silent than I don’t necessarily want silent (live photos being the one stands out).

[–] 19Chris96@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not if I make my custom notification sound deafening.

I use the Sonic Advance 3 Chaos Emerald Get jingle.

[–] NotMarksII@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only sound my phone ever makes is for alarms

[–] mrscarytt@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So I can’t even set my notification iPhone sound on Twitter (X) now? The new sounds sucks and it’s unchangeable? How fucking stupid!
