This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

MODERATORS
While I’m not the biggest fan of Mountaintops, I really like the Consecrated Snowfield. I clear it out on most of my playthroughs. Unique mini-dungeons, the most powerful versions of some (mini-)bosses, nice environmental gimmicks; what not to love?
My biggest objection to the Snowfields is the magma wyrm, fuck that magma wyrm. I'm pretty sure luring the squids towards it is an intended solution, but magma wyrms are pretty much dead last in terms of minibosses I enjoy fighting anyway. On the upside he's super easy to ignore
The archers are fun opponents, if brutal ones. I don't think we face anything else that fights similarly to them anywhere in the game
Between the angry mausoleum, the ghostly dragonkin, the invisible black knives, and the deathbird, the Snowfields probably have the highest density of panic-induced scrambles of any area
I love Theodorix! The Troll who ate too many Dragon Hearts. He is so huge and does so much damage, but he is also so slow and even slower to wake up. I fight him on almost every playthrough. I think I defeated him on all of my RL1 characters. On the rare occasions when I don't feel like fighting him, I watch the cage match against the octopus.
But I also generally like the Magma Wyrm moveset. Not the most complex fight, but a nice minor Boss fight. What's your favorite minor Dragon Boss?
Consecrated Snowfield is probably the open-world area that wants to kill the player the most; it throws almost everything in the game's arsenal at once at the player.
Two things you didn't name that I find truly dangerous in the Snowfield: the strongest Red Wolf mini-boss with an army of lesser wolves at his disposal and the strongest Runebear in the game disguised as a noble stuck in snow. I think this Runebear is a stronger enemy than even the Bosses in the area.
Favourite minor dragon boss: I think probably either Lansseax or Greyll. Lansseax because her moveset is spiced up a little compared to the other ancient dragons and the lingering lightning effect is a little training exercise for dealing with the same thing against Fortissax and Placidusax. Greyll because the bridge setting just looks really dramatic and also imposes some restrictions on how to deal with specific moves (like avoiding any of the fire breath attacks)
I genuinely had no idea there was a red wolf in the Snowfields. I thought for sure you must have been thinking of the leonine misbegotten, but no, you're right. Apparently I have never once wandered over its way
The hidden runebear is hilarious. You can practically hear the devs laughing at you
What's not to love?
Albinauric archers and the fog that makes half the area impossible to see in.
I like the Albinaurics archers. They are very widely spaced and the wolf + archer combo is fun.
It‘s fun finding the stuff in the thick snowstorm ("fog") and even though it seems as if it covers half the area it's barely a fourth of the snowfields. Also it's relatively easy and rewarding to navigate with the map. The map-fragment can easily be found even on a first playthrough since it’s pre-marked.
But to each their own. What is your favorite open world area in Elden Ring?
My favorite area visually is Soifra River, but I generally wait for connections when invading at the Cliff-Facing Precipice site of grace for the fact you can hear the Siren one floor below singing.
But also: specifically the archers in the snowfield that suck are the 3 in Ordina. It feels like storming the beaches of Normandy avoiding machine gun fire trying to light the candles.
Siofra is one of the most beautiful areas in any game I've ever played
Regarding Ordina: your route can make a huge difference. The one I usually take only requires me to make one short run with two of them shooting at me, otherwise it's no more than one at a time. But if all else fails, the torches stay lit between attempts
Tip for Ordina Gaol:
Assassin’s Gambit and a Greatbow. Assassin’s Gambit makes it so that the Black Knives mostly ignore you and you have to deal with one archer at most at a time. You can then use a Greatbow shot to yeet the archer of the rooftops. The knockback knocks them down; you don’t even need to upgrade the bow.
