I made an apple pie once that was the best pie I've ever made. Spent years trying to replicate the perfect storm which led to it, haven't managed it. If I had pictures I'd plaster them everywhere...

I did the same with a sandwich once. 10 years later, I think about this sandwich. Toasted Reuben on sourdough. Never could get it the same again.

Did that with cookies once. A whole series of mistakes during the process and fixes to recover from those mistakes resulted in a batch of perfectly undercooked and absolutely delicious cookies that I've never forgotten... and also never managed to replicate.

Chicken tikka masala one friend holiday for me. We were socializing and drinking and I didn't follow the recipe and let it simmer for an unkown amount of time.

We were all in heaven. No idea what I did. Havent been able to reproduce.

Fucking hell I share the same experience. I made an apple pie with buttery dough, the crust was just perfect. Have tried to replicate it ever since, not once it came even close. Same ingredients, same ratios, I am not sure what am I missing, maybe the temperature fluctuated just right, I can't tell... maybe the apple juices were just right, so many factors...

I still remember the flaky crunchy crust from a pizza place that went out of business 30 years ago.

That's quite artsy for someone who's obsessed with a pizza.
