Originally thought cabin but didn’t stick. Kay-bin 100%.

[–] Semmelstulle@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago

Same here. But I'd not be surprised if we have Cabin for kbin at some point.

[–] psyspoop@kbin.social 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

[–] cutitdown@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

southern accent

Hey y'all, we're headin' down 'er to m'k'bin on the bayou this weeken' if ya wanna tagalong

[–] SuburbanHaikuist@kbin.social 12 points 2 years ago

K'bin sounds more like I'm answering a k'nock at the door but with a cold.

[–] HawkXero@kbin.social 11 points 2 years ago

Kay-bin for sure. Never occurred to me to pronounce it the other way

[–] Andjhostet@kbin.social 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I wouldn't trust my kids around someone that pronounces it k'bin

[–] LopensLeftArm@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

K'bin sounds like a Klingon name.

[–] Ragnell@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I thought in Klingon they pronounced those kind of names like Kay-bin

[–] Ferk@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I don't think Klingon has a K' anywhere, in fact in Klingon it would be written "Q" and followed by some vowel, like in Qapla' or in Qi'yaH

That's still likely a mistransliteration (or maybe because those are proper names), but Klingon has only "q" and "Q" (which depending on the capitalization are pronounced differently, treated as different letters), technically there's no "K" in the Klingon alphabet, you can see it in the pIqaD:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:KLI_pIqaD.svg

Similar as with the "f" from "Worf", there wouldn't be a straight "non-destructive" way to write it in Klingon.

Who the fuck says k'bin?

[–] Mars2k21@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Kay-bin seems like the only correct way. Cabin or K'bin just feels wrong for no particular reason. The name honestly just makes me think of KDE.

[–] WorseDoughnut@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Same, k-anything has just been beaten into my brain as "oh a KDE app!"

I say kay-bin, because it kind of looks like it should sound like that, imo.

K'bin feels like I'm just trying to make the word as short as possible.

Cabin or Ki-bin both feel like I'm adding new letters just because. To me, it would be like calling reddit "reddita" or "reedit".

[–] fiat_lux@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

Kay-bin. Mostly because when I first saw the name I assumed it was a KDE package.

[–] Cloudless@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Non-native speaker here. I get kay-bin, but how are you supposed to say k'bin?

[–] jon@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

Kuh-bin, with the first syllable short and emphasis on the second.

[–] scribs@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 years ago

like "book bin" but without the "boo"

[–] toasteranimation@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)
[–] minnieo@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

i do kih bin. kih rhyming with like "fi" in fill or "pi" in pill

[–] Antiscamer7@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] minnieo@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

same here, i didnt know i was in the minority on this one lol

[–] Eggyhead@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The K has got to be a silent one. This place is 'bin!

[–] Rhaedas@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

No, the leading forward slash is silent.

[–] Shurimal@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

I pronounce it "kibin"🙃

[–] nightauthor@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

When I refer to the threadiverse in general (including “I saw a post on on…”) I just say lemmy. I actually really dislike the name “kbin”.

No sense in explaining it tho, cuz if you don’t get it, you won’t get it.

[–] cutitdown@kbin.social 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Interesting. For some reason kbin sounds better than lemmy to me, but don't super love either.

[–] nightauthor@kbin.social 8 points 2 years ago

Both are still better than “beehaw”

[–] elscallr@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

I say "the lemmybins"

[–] Amongog@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

In spanish you are likely to default to k'bin (cabin).
Letter K pronunciation varies across the globe, so I think everyone will have variations of it.

I say “Kay-bee”; the n is silent

[–] phi1997@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

I say kay-bin, but for a third option: cabin

[–] dandan@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)
[–] Peruvian_Skies@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

What about "quou-been"?

[–] minnieo@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago
[–] joeygibson@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

Kay-bin.

It reminds me of the property manager at my first apartment, back in 1990. She spelled her name "K'ren", and I assumed it was pronounced either Karen, or kuh-Ren. Nope. It was "KAAAAYYY-WRREE-NNN", three syllables in her very southern accent. The stress was on both of the first two syllables. 😂️

[–] Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

kevin like in "Kevin Bacon"

[–] Itty53@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Native English speakers rarely realize how similar B and V sounds are virtually everywhere else in the world.

[–] Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

In Spanish they are not similar, but both letters represent the same sound, literally.

[–] dosidosankofa@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago

KAY bin ..... right? (RIGHT??
