I had been using my company's Outlook calendar, which worked well for me. However, after leaving the company, I started using the iPhone's calendar and ended up missing several important appointments...

Can anyone recommend a good calendar app? It would be great if it's free. Thank you!

Why did you miss the appointments? They are displayed in the calendar. You can have them displayed in a Home Screen widget. You get the same sound, banner, badge, Lock Screen, and Notification Center notifications in all iOS apps.

I use the stock calendar for personal and Google calendar for work.
