They KNOW they’re spam calls. They KNOW the uncheckmarked numbers are not valid. So why the hell do they let these calls through? Anyone know?

I have not lived in CT for 15 years but have a 203 number. If I get a call from any of those area codes I know for sure it’s a fucking scam.

[–] Ryanbrasher@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Some do depending on the carrier

[–] izz0218@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is this with your unknown caller option enabled?

[–] EastDragonfly1917@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I paid $50 for “Robokiller” for a year. The shit calls do not ring anymore.

[–] HiitlerDicks@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Intercept? They facilitate them lol

[–] dahliamma@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Apple added a setting in iOS 17 that lets you block calls that the carrier marks as spam, but unfortunately it doesn’t actually work. It worked for maybe two beta builds over the summer, then it stopped and Apple hasn’t bothered to fix it.

Ayo, I don't get spam risk written on unknown phone numbers on my iPhone 13 Pro. Is there some setting option to enable that?

[–] EastDragonfly1917@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s prob AT+T doing it. It JUST started. Now I don’t answer ANY phone calls. When it stops ringing I look at the number to see if I have to call back. Fucking pain in the ass- every day

[–] rajapaws@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The phone companies make a fraction of a penny for each one of these calls to facilitate the interconnection, that's why it will never stop.

[–] DunDat2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

aren't they required to develop systems to prevent this in order to keep CRTC licenses?

[–] Kitten-Mittons@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Pay your bills

[–] MrChamploo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

T-Mobile offers an app for it.

[–] yaboyfriendisadork@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just answer and start saying racist shit if they have an Indian accent. Is that bad? Probably, but fuck em.

[–] EastDragonfly1917@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I did SO MUCH of that- ohhh the bad stuff I said. They start off all polite but when they hear me they turn into Satan. They’re all scumbags

[–] jdsundevils@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have a coworker that tries to have elaborate conversations with them. I don’t have that kind of patience.

[–] CreeperThePro@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Use Robokiller

[–] hogtrek@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

But they’d lose revenue!

If you live in the US, your carrier likely offers an app that will prevent spam calls from ringing and spam texts from delivering. It may cost a couple bucks (USD) a month or may be free. AT&T ActiveArmor is absolutely superb at blocking spam calls and texts and I notice the crazy increase in spam every time I turn it off or leave AT&T. The premium version comes free with AT&T Unlimited Premium and AT&T Unlimited Elite (for those that still have it) and is I think a $3.99 /mo add-on for other plans. There is also a free, less robust version, available to users on cheaper plans as well. But to answer your question, carriers already can. It’s your job as a customer to decide if you want to let them.

Switch carriers to one that does

[–] lordruperteverton69@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The number 1 reason I miss my google pixel is the call screening and blocking spam calls. Google really did a great job addressing that problem.

[–] CrippleSlap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My carrier (Telus) here in Canada has a great feature called Call Control. If an unknown # tries to call me it prompts them to input a code on their end to verify they're human. I literally get no spam calls. Ever.

With this feature I get to add 20 contacts as a whitelist who call me often and I verify.

I used to get several spam calls a day. I started blocking any number that even remotely seemed like spam, and now I probably have over 200 on the list. It took a while, maybe a few months, but the calls gradually decreased until they stopped almost altogether. Now I may get one or two a month at the most.

Damn, I moved from CT back in ‘96. Very weird for me to see a post on Reddit showing a Waterbury phone number. I was from Naugatuck.

[–] superpopsicle@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been getting so many lately. The problem is that in the midst of all the trash, a few calls I need to actually accept get routed as spam and I end up missing them.

[–] _electronic_rogue_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Pixel block these spam calls automatically.

[–] ChopEee@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They already do if you pay them for it

[–] Disastrous_Ad_6031@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I muted unknown callers on my iPhone. Everyone important is a contact and if an unknown number calls I can see the visual voicemail

[–] Sempot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

An opsie for emergency call by the hospital

[–] schaudhery@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you have T-Mobile they have an app you can install to block a majority of these calls.

[–] BeachedBottlenose@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m with AT&T and I receive very few spam calls.

[–] Schly@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

AT&T comes with a spam blocker app called Armor something or something like that. It cuts down the calls by about 80% and it’s free.

[–] Whiplash104@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Verizon's call filter blocks anything that is suspected spam (if you set it so.) There is also a setting "Silence junk callers" that specifically silences "spam likely" (even without call filter.) I very rarely get a call that rings through. Check to see if your carrier has a spam blocking app.

[–] Zestyclose-Web-6868@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Afaik you can tell them to block 3rd party calls automatically

[–] se7entythree@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Is your number on the Do Not Call list? You have to renew it every so often too.

[–] SeekNDstroy93@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Never cuz they suck!

[–] Armanhammer2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I dont get any anymore
