I’m a big fan of Safari and how seamlessly it works with all my Apple devices, but these ads are pushing me to the edge. I can't even get through an article without being interrupted by some ad or another. It’s super annoying.

I’ve looked up older threads on this, and I’m choosing between two adblockers rn - Stop the Madness and Magic Lasso. They both seem like they could be a solution, but I'm not sure which one to go for. Anything that stands out?

Are there other options I’m missing?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insights you guys can offer.

NextDNS.

Blocks Ads, Trackers, Malware, Phishing etc (ALL system wide, not just Safari)

Adguard (free)

[–] bigdogxxl@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

AdGuard works well for me. It also let me block ads in most apps. You can usually get a decent lifetime license for a bunch of devices (I believe 5) at StackSocial.

EDIT: Just checked, and yeah, really good deal running right now: https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/adguard-family-plan-lifetime-subscription

Another vote for 1Blocker. Been using it for years. Works great and syncs across devices: MacOS, iPasOS and iOS. Great support and well maintained by the developer.

Whenever there’s ad in an article I refresh the page and quickly turn on the Reader Mode.

[–] UnderpassAppCompany@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

StopTheMadness is not an ad blocker, though it can auto-skip YouTube video ads.

I use Wipr, seen it recommended here before and seems to work pretty well!

Dumb question but does this work with Firefox? I swapped bc that’s what I use on desktop and I like it but I could use some more adblock

I use AdGuard for free, it's not blocking every ads out there. But there are sites i didn't realized had ads bcs i didn't see them in the first place.

[–] Corevegaa@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use their dns based Adblock and it’s working flawlessly no app required just install the profile from their website.

[–] Chazay@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I use AdGuard(pro, there was a lifetime deal a long time ago). It's great.

Me too. I don’t think I ever see ads, except on YouTube

[–] Nervous_Custard5257@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same for me, I pay for the pro version and it blocks all ads, including youtube ones, when using it in the browser.

[–] cwsjr2323@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I use Chrome, mostly because I am used to it from using Android so long. Safari seems to use Google, too, just adds ads.

Google is an advertising company first and foremost. They're the worst offender by far when it comes to protecting your data.

Chrome is so buggy, slow, and ad-riddled on ios that it’s basically useless.

Try Brave Browser, it’s built in ad blocker is a beast. I switched every browser over to Brave.

[–] VoluntarilyCrushing@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Cool tip! 🙌 Might give Brave a shot too....How's your experience with Brave compared to other browsers?

[–] SwiftlyJon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

1Blocker for paid blocking, Wipr for free.

[–] DooDeeDoo3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wipr is paid tho.

[–] Jealous-Honeydew-142@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bought Adguard. Think it was £4.99 for the year. It's blocked 99% of adverts and I am more than happy with it

[–] nth_power@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I use the reader mode. All ads disappear

Adguard is my go to

I also use their DNS to block adds in apps and it works flawlessly

[–] marvin69420@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Nextdns blocks mobile ads in games it’s so awesome

[–] plaintivesyntax@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Why not stick to Safari's built-in features? Simpler is better.

[–] CrippleSlap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why not stick to Safari's built-in features?

Or why not even use a system wide ad blocker? Why block ads only in Safari?

[–] material_technology_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I didn’t even know Safari had built-in ad-blocking features. How do you activate them?

[–] enterdoki@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Adguard and Wipr are great out of the box ad blockers. I tried Magic Lasso and it was not that good.

[–] SpuriousScenari@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been using Magic Lasso for a while now and have never had any issues. It blocks all ads without slowing down my browser.

[–] Honest_Appointment68@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Totally agree. It’s easy to set up too.

[–] undertheskin_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I use Wipr and never see ads

[–] mantra2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wipr works great for iOS and macOS.

[–] TetraLog@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use pihole + adguard and browsing has been ad free even on sketchy sites

[–] ninja6911@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wipr works really well ,one time purchase, install and forget

[–] JollyRoger8X@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

1Blocker

I've used it for years on macOS and iOS and it's terrific. The free version is sufficient for most ads, but the upgrade enabled additional blocking behaviors, including custom blocking. The iOS version also comes with an app firewall that block ads in other iOS apps.

I don’t use any ad blockers. I just deal with the ads. I don’t want to risk any third-party apps accessing my data

[–] redmemory50@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Lol some ad blockers actually enhance privacy by blocking trackers. And literally every other app harvests your data

[–] CrippleSlap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t want to risk any third-party apps accessing my data

This is the most crazy reason I've ever heard for not using an ad blocker. You realize most ad blockers block more than just Ads? You're actually protecting yourself from trackers, phishing, malware etc by using ad blockers.

[–] shadowmage666@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Firefox focus as a safari plugin

[–] ClamJohn@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Switch to brave. Even YouTube ads disappear

Stop the Madness is decent, but I see some ads slip through.

[–] NuttyCry67@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Same here, it’s good but not perfect.

[–] Ventem@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I got Hyperweb mostly for the dark mode on Safari, but have found their adblocker seems to work well too.

[–] SkiaTheShade@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use AdGuard since it’s free and it works just fine!

[–] AgreeableAd8687@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

nextDNS with adblock filters works wonders

[–] ken3260@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve been using AdGuard for years and never had any issues. I bought the pro version a while back but I believe the free version should work just as good.

[–] ColorSplit_CC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

privacyguides.org recommends adguard. I use their free option. In addition I also use NextDNS as a DNS based adblocker. I’m on the paid plan, but the free plan should be plenty for just your mobile devices’ Safari.

Just click the “Aa” on the side for reader mode. Life changing.
