Hello friends, do you reset your iPhone? I have never rested my iPhone yet, more than 18 months since I bought it. But my friend adviced me to reset it every 6 months Is it true ?

Occasionally very rarely something doesn’t work as expected usually an app but sometimes even my ringers and/or notifications act strange so I will do a soft reset. (Just turning it off and back on)

[–] Egg_Jacktly@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That’s called restart not reset, don’t make up words to confuse more tech illiterate people.

iPhone „science“ reminds me of snake oil „science“

[–] DarkLord55_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have used phones for 4 years and never reset them

[–] CodyakaLamer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only time I restart mine is when it starts acting up

[–] Thedeckatnight@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I would say a BIG “N-O” on that notion…..

[–] doghouse2001@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Uh, no? There are those rare occasion when Wifi stops working properly so a shutdown/reboot is necessary. That is not a reset.

[–] zerbey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Your friend is mistaken.

[–] brunozp@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Just do it when there is a major iOS update. Otherwise, there is no need to.

Only if I’m having an issue that restarting doesn’t fix. Doesn’t happen often as the process is easy but will take like 30 minutes between erasing and redownloading everything.

[–] SporkFanClub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I factory reset once when I had a 5C and that was only because the memory function was so messed up that I could no longer receive text messages.

[–] SmokyTurbo6@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Don’t reset unless you have an issue that would seem to require it.

[–] OldVenomSnake@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Reset means rebooting the phone? I only do that when I update OS or I encounter an issue that forced me to reboot.

[–] ryanb450@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, maybe once a year, and only if I’m having troubles.

[–] marc_816@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve also heard some people recommend to reset your iPhone once a year. I’ve never done it actually, I don’t think it makes any noticeable difference, maybe it solves some problem that you have before restarting but if you don’t have any i can’t see the point.

u/Silvestre074, did your friend explain what a 'reset' meant?

- factory reset?

- settings reset?

Just some sample options.

Please do share in detail what 'reset' is supposed to mean

[–] arby90@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It automatically does this for you when it updates so no need

[–] adnilempez@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I rest my iphone at night.

[–] Top-Measurement575@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

no, that does nothing unless you’re full on data.

[–] Beneficial-Studio122@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Most ridiculous thing I ever heard.

… at first, I thought you meant “restart”. I do restart every now and then but only if something is acting weird or buggy. I can go months without it but sometimes I will.

It’s generally not a bad idea to to restart smartphones but iPhones less so than other OS’s.

[–] JohnMorganTN@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I've never had too. I've went from the 7+, 10s, 13 without a factory reset. The person who told you that must have came from Android originally.

[–] cantstandthemlms@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If it gets fussy I do.

[–] NickTDesigns@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Reset? Like wipe all your data? No, never do that unless it's actually necessary for some specific reason.

[–] PKMNTrainerEevs@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ll only do it when there’s a major iOS update and only when my iPhone is acting up or just to reset when the storage of the apps exceed a point where I just want the space back

[–] fabrictm@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Do you mean a hard reset like wipe data and put it in factory default or a hard reboot with volume up/down, hold right button?

[–] swagglepuf@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only if you have a software issue that would require it. Which is very unlikely in most cases. I have only done this once and that was to reinstall iOS due to a software bug with one of apples native applications.

[–] CherryCC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Did it last week, made my phone feel brand new

[–] RevolutionaryAd2974@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No. You don’t have to unless it’s experiencing some kind of malfunction, then doing a hard restart, pressing volume up, volume down, then hold the power button till you see the apple. That usually fixes any errors I have going on and then it works fine. I never have to shut it off

[–] kaneki-30@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just do it randomly, I literally did it a couple hours ago.

[–] bodonnell202@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I reset my iPhone whenever it has weird issues, which usually means every few weeks.

[–] Outside-Copy-7645@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I start new phones as new but I don’t reset my current ones unless I need to

[–] xTVPx@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I do hard restarts from time to time when it glitches out. But that’s about it.

[–] Victrollie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Never reset your iPhone unless you are planning on losing all of your data, giving the phone away, or selling the phone.

[–] Rokstar73@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

“Every 8 months” LOL. How does he even come up with that number?

[–] Appleenthusiasts@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Only if you can’t fix something do you do a hard wipe. No need to reset every 6 months. Why would Apple design a phone that has to be reset so often?

[–] OddGigabyte@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s kind of nice to do a reset once in a while as it does help clear a lot of cache and other data that is just lingering in your iPhone

[–] Quinesta@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I turn mine off every day. I have no idea if that’s a good thing or not, but I feel like it needs a break lol

[–] NoSoulsINC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

As in factory reset or turn it off and back on?

[–] Appropriate-Eyes@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

By reset do you mean factory reset? As in wiping the phone clean every 6 months? If so, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while.

[–] ForcedToCreateAc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I do a backup and full factory reset once every major OS version releases, but only then.

I have never had any issues, bugs nor anything similar that's widely reported when new versions of iOS are released, and I believe that's because upgrading always leave remnants of lingering trash. But that's me.

[–] OrP101@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Every big update

[–] Smart_N_Sassy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you reset your phone, it goes back to factory settings. It’s a pain in the butt!

[–] 05fingaz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s not a steak mate

[–] jotkaPL@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

factory reset every major IOS upgrade.

[–] theoreticaljerk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just "setup as new" a few days ago. I had a couple of bugs that had been so long standing I was convinced it had to be something wrong with my setup only and it was carrying over when I was restoring from backups. These bugs had followed me through multiple iPhone versions and multiple major iOS versions.

After doing the full reset and "setup as new"....those bugs still exist and it was a wasted effort.

Restoring from backup is fine.
