I can’t have the phone vibrate, but make no sound when I get a notification, without that affecting other system sounds?

My phone has been on mute with vibration turned off since I got an Apple Watch in 2015.
...they are holding it wrong.
Long past time for Apple to add this capability. Android has had it for ages. Samsung with Good Lock can even have app-specific audio settings.
It’s really baffling to (very deliberately) have no option in the camera app to turn off shutter sounds - as if it’s some kind of moral or legal requirement - but then allow you to turn it off globally via silent mode. It’s the single strangest UX decision on this thing.
Why don’t text message notifications automatically mute while I’m on a phone call? Why do I need my eardrum blown out by a text message ding while on a phone call?
Are posts with actual substance allowed here?
Agreed.
For me its as simple as keeping the ringer on at night for emergencies, but turn off texts for my idiot friend who sends his ponderings while on the crapper at 6 am, central time.
First thing I do when I’m setting up my phone.
Real ones remember when Apple had separate ringer and media volume controls
Yeah, I agree with all this, although personally I don’t leave it off. More like 50/50.
The candy crush ads are annoying.
i think you can turn off screenshot noises in settings
I bought my first iPhone this year -- the 15 Pro. I am considering switching over back to Samsung when their next flagship comes out, because iPhone is unsafe to use when not on mute. Each time I have gotten a Messenger notification while on call I had tinnitus in my ear for the next couple of minutes. I have set up an automation which lowers the ringer volume when I put on my airpods, but there is no automation possible to do the same when I pick up a call. I have submitted a bug report to Apple too. I just don't want to get tinnitus every time someone texts me when I'm on a call.
Because apple know best, now sush your pretty head and look at our new, new expensive phone which has the same problem.
Because… it’s annoying to hear any noise at all, ever.
I've always wondered that. I keep my ringer off since every time I send a Snapchat or screenshot I don't want people to think I am sending pictures of them.. if I could turn off camera noises, I would leave my ringer on.
Then obviously you need an apple watch so you can always know when you get a call even when away from your phone and even when your phone is on silent. Noob lol. 😝
I just don’t need the ringer turned on?
Yuuuuup. I’ve been complaining about this for several years. At work I need the ringer loud to hear it over, well, everything (loud environment). At home, in a house dead quiet, I don’t want my alarm at max volume scaring the absolute shit out of me, and waking up everyone else in the house in the process. I can not for the life of me figure why the fuck volume isn’t separate. Such a stupid thing not to have.
I never use the ringer because I always have my AirPods or Apple Watch with me. I get notifications on both.
Only a muted phone is a good phone.
Any where to request features that Apple will actually look at?
I definitely miss having more control about the phone sounds on Android
Oh, yes. Annoying as hell.
I know this aint really a proper solution... but it also is a solution.
dont buy and use an iphone?
i like apple's computers
but their phones are stupid
This, the keyboard, and youtube vanced are the things I miss most from android
Yep it’s one thing Android does do better for sure.
It’s less customisable but your 10yr old cousin and 78yr old grandmother find it easy to use. It’s a silent switch. Turn it to silent and your phone cannot make a sound without an interaction by you. Very simple and easy to understand. If you want more granular control of this in iOS you’ll have to use a combination of Focus modes and Shortcuts. Personally I think of be pretty easy for Apple to retain the simplistic silent mode AND add setting level granular control too.
Mine has been on vibrate ever since I got an Apple Watch, which has been 5+ years. Never had an issue or desire to go back. It has nothing to do with the reasons you listed.
Apple software team is stubborn. People have cried for proper audio and video routing. It gets worse when you air play to the tv and choose to use other apps; any video or audio on the phone will take over the entire airplay. Connect an iPad to a monitor and the sound routes to the monitor even if there are no speakers and you can’t do anything about it.
So is this is why I’m not able to have my ringtone only vibrate and sound notifications for other alerts?
Buy good phone please.
Buy an Android if you love to tinker.
Because apple knows best, silly.
thats why i always got it either unmuted and on dnd or muted and not on dnd
There are some awesome features on iPhone. But Android does what I want it to, not what Apple thinks is best.
On my list is muting by app, or defaulting all apps to muted until toggled on like Chrome tabs. It's so nice to not have random ads blow up my music or podcast. Also then maybe Spotify won't take over audio in my car.
Never thought about it, but this is partially true.
That will be 119.99 to turn that off
Because this is the apple way
You can do this by creating or editing a focus
I leave mine off because if I’m talking on the phone while they’re on and I get a text the notification noise is BLASTED in my ear. While I’m on the call.
I’ve had many iPhones, my first was the 3g now I’m a 14 pro. I don’t think any other phone I had did that.
I don’t
I have kept my ringer off 24/7. Getting anxiety attacks from the calls and dings. I only turn it back on when my family and I are shopping in case we need to find each other.
I’m one of the weird ones that hate my phone making any kind of noise, so this lack of feature doesn’t bother me.
Ever since I bought a watch that vibrates my wrist for alerts, I’ve turned off any kind of noise. I don’t need alerted twice.
I keep my phone on silent because I don’t want to be bothered, also I have an Apple Watch for notifications.
I only recently switched to iPhone and trust me my last 15 Androids were all permanently silent too lol
But yes, they should have a way to easily break apart the sound levels
I have an android phone for work and I turn both off. It’s just annoying. I don’t want a ringtone blasted when I am on train, or at my desk at work. Even just notification bings are godawful.
‘Member when Nokia allowed you to switch profiles with the power button?
Suck on them titties Tim.
No, that's not why iPhones users always have ringer turned off. Its because they usually have an Apple Watch (or other smartwatch like Garmin) that alerts them to incoming calls or notifications. Ringer is redundant and not necessary.
Its been that way for me and everyone i know for years now.
Isn't it fucking annoying when...
