Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

I'm going to Costa Rica, specifically traveling to San José and the neighboring cities for a study abroad hosted by my university (for about 9 days) I'll be staying with a host family while there for the first half.

Any advice for a first time traveler to Central America? I'm a spanish major but I've only traveled to Madrid before in high school for another study abroad. Any tips for navigating Costa Rican culture compared to other países hispanohablantes?

Eat chifrijo. Eat patacones. Try some of the Caribbean food. Stop shouting, all of the Americans seem to be shouting there, it was the only annoying bit of the whole trip, such a tranquil place, then bam here comes a big loud American stomping through the jungle shouting. Same in the hotels etc. I'm sure there were nice normal Americans but you know, nobody got to meet them because you are put off by the big loud toolbags who are shouting a lot. They are everywhere.

it's good you are staying with a host family. Costa Ricans are cool, friendly people. If you are going out at night in San Jose ask your host family where to go out, specifically where not to go, you can get robbed at gunpoint pretty easily there if your aren't aware.

Stay away from the large amount of crusty white expats who buy an organic farm an "retire" to Costa Rica.
