I guess if you already have an ipad and are an apple user yet don't have money to burn...

I'll stick with my cheapo usbc portable monitors that require no setup other than plugging in cables and the power to the monitor is also passed through to the switch.

Can you link to the ones you bought? Might be useful for others who want to do the same.

Neat. What would the use case for this be though? Maybe while riding on a plane?

If you’re somewhere where there’s sunlight, you could play on this instead of the switch. I don’t know about you, but I can’t see anything on my switch while playing in daylight.

I absolutely know what you mean. I got these for myself, they work awesome:

BROTECT 2x Entspiegelungs-Schutzfolie kompatibel mit Nintendo Switch Matte Displayschutz-Folie, Anti-Reflex, Anti-Fingerprint https://amzn.eu/d/8UwUGXJ

But it has to be said you pay with a little decrease in image sharpness. Not much, but noticeable if you look closely.

That’s neat. A more sensible option despite any loss in quality. Thanks for sharing that.

Yeah. Travel. We were in a cabin for a weekend recently and I had my iPad and we had our switch, would’ve been nice to connect the two. The little screen on the switch is just too small for 2 player games.

I got a laptop with a USB-C port which supports external monitors. Does anyone know what I would need to use my iPad Pro as a second monitor with this port? Or would I have to use the HDMI port with peripherals like in the link?

Does it also work with a Windows PC?

The article says it doesn't add any lag, but I am skeptical. At the very least there will be a buffer to sync playback with the display. Apple didn't design this feature with this use case in mind, so I doubt they put in any special effort to minimize latency.

In my experience, when random people say they "don't feel any lag" with something but don't put up any numbers to back it up, I usually end up feeling quite a bit of lag that they just don't notice for one reason or another.

I think you're right to be skeptical. I keep meaning to try it myself, but I'm easily distracted. I'll likely find motivation in the fall when I go on vacation.

I actually could see myself get an iPad now.

Sometimes I travel light and just bring my steam deck as a laptop. But for certain tasks and local multiplayer player games the screen is to small especially with it being a controller.

Then prop up an ipad and suddenly I have a 10 inch(I don’t know the size) screen.

Android tablets are much much better for this. See super display

[–] hogart@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Super Display only seem to work if you get windows and dual boot. Seems to be 0 Linux support because of hw acceleration. Bummer. Thanks for the tip though!

[–] The_Mixer_Dude@lemmus.org 1 points 2 years ago

Deskreen seems to do similar for Linux if mirroring a display. To do multi desktop it appears you need to have a virtual display adapter to make it work

[–] Tunawithshoes@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That program looks amazing!

Sadly it is only windows only while I prefer to keep my steam deck Linux.

That and as a computing device, the iPad’s battery life is second to none. My high end laptop meant for graphics and GIS lasts maybe an hour on battery. The iPad lasts half a day if not more with straight use.

[–] Tunawithshoes@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 2 years ago

Yeah exactly. I would not buy an external display as 80% of the time it would be useless.

But an iPad I could actually use for other things then just screen mirror. Especially with that battery life.
